Help! I seem to have deleted the maps from my Etrex Summit. When I go into
MapSource, select areas and try to "Save to Device" I get an error message
"Your GPS does not support map transfer".

I'm sure I had to load it up from MapSource when I got it. I can't find
anything useful under Map Setup on the unit (it just says "No Map"
underneath the scale bar.

The Summit does not support additional map uploading and has no basemap.
See the specs here:

Thanks; OK, that seems pretty explicit, I agree. However I evidently have a
?hardware? glitch, because today it shows just an outline of the UK
(before, it was blank) and now it is letting me upload from MapSource (after
giving dire warnings that it will erase anything I have there).

Also, in spite of what the web page says, there is under maps an option to
change the level of detai, which surely implies it *can* store some maps.

maybe you are talking about Summit HC
which is a different device than the old Summit (V<2.5) or Summit (V>3)

Having the map detail level does not imply that it can store
maps in the usual sense of "maps." The original b&w eTrex
Venture does not have maps but has a map detail level setting.
The Venture does have 1MB of memory for storing points of
interest and the map detail level controls how many
points are displayed on the map screen at a given
zoom level.
