Author software compatibility

I have a Garmin Legend.
Is it possible to load maps from two different map cds onto it?

When I travel to an area I only need road information along the way, when I
get to my target area I need detailed topo info.
Is it possible to download some maps from Topo USA and some from say Metro
guide or National geograhics GPS CD at the same time?
Would my Legend seamlessly switch between the two sets of maps like it does
now between the built in basemap and the downloaded TOPO quadrangles?

If this is possible can someone tell me how to do it or direct me to the URL
or an FAQ with instructions?

Both maps installed on Mapsource? Should be able to select BOTH maps using
the selection tool and upload them to the GPS (or SD card)

You might also find this useful... Look for a freeware program called
IMGTransparent by Peter Dekode.
I us this modify all my TOPO maps before I load them on my GPS.
With this software the Topo Maps become transparrent and you can see both
map at the same time and do not have to switch between then.

Install both or all sets of maps to MapSource. Then you can select
(upper left corner) one type at a time for viewing and map selection
from MapSource. If you select some maps from one product, then change
products to view another and select maps from that, the selections are
added to the first set.

With all the wanted maps selected, you can upload them and they will
overwrite the existing supplemental detail map that is on the GPS
receiver now.

You cannot add maps piecemeal, you have to recreate the entire previous
selection and add to that to add one or more new maps. If you use
Transfer and choose to download maps, it will download the current
selections from the receiver (it will not actually download the actual
maps, just the selection) and those can be seen and amended from the
Maps tab in MapSource and saved to a *.gdb file for later use.

If you press Menu and Setup Map, then cursor to the Map Info icon you'll
see a list of the supplemental maps there and the ones that are checked
are turned on. It is laborious but you can turn individual maps on and
off there. The easy way is to press Menu again and use the Show and
Hide choices to turn maps on and off by the product name.

There is a hierarchy of display when more than onee mapping product is
in the Show mode. If you have both MetroGuide and Topo in the show
mode, you'll have to Hide MetroGuide to see the topo maps. Or so I
think anyway. Another way to do it is to Hide All and then Show the one
you want to see.

There will be a slight delay as maps are turned on and off and the
buttons will be unresponsive for a few seconds.

Here is a link to a site with a lot of useful information, you might
find what you're looking for in some of the Reviews and in the
Instructions section:

You can only load Garmin maps to the device, not National Geographic.
If the Topo USA you are referring to is Garmin, it will work. If it's
DeLorme, it will not.
