What is the purpose of track filtering in MapSource? As best I can tell,
all it does is remove datapoints without any particular rationale.

If you set it to time and 30 seconds, it will remove points
that are less than 30 seconds apart.

If you set it to distance and 20 feet, it will remove points
that are less than 20 feet apart.

If you set it to automatic, it will remove the points from
the middle of straight line segments within some tolerance
depending on the more or less points setting.

TopoFusion's track averaging is the most sophisticated
I am aware of in the programs and may only apply to
the horizontal.

No GPS utility program that I am aware of does anywhere
near as well as the human mind for filtering GPS data.
