| Can anyone tell me where to find the original basemap on Garmin's site?
I loaded some topos into the unit but it made it difficult to read.
Thanks... Bob

The basemap is still in there - there's no way for the user to ever
delete the basemap. I don't remember the exact steps on the Legend,
but there's a menu option to turn off display of the more detailed
maps so you only see the basemap. Then you can turn on the other maps
whenever desired.

Peter is correct - you never get rid of the base map... any maps you
additionally load are viewed "over" the base map.
To view the base map, select which maps you want the Legend to display
A. Go the the Map page (screen) on the etrex Legend
B. Select the "Setup Map" (with the click-stick) under "Options"
C. Select the right-most icon, which looks like the letter "i"
D. With the letter "i" selected, select the "Options" icon with the
click-stick and select "Show None"
Note that you can selectively view individual maps by enabling/disabling
them with the check box next to their name in the pull down menu.

That leaves me with no maps at all.
When I loaded the topos to the Legend I got a warning that I would
overlay the "original map" or some such wording. It also reassured me
that I could download the "original map" from the Garmin website. Don't
think it gave me a specific link and I've been unable to find it.
Thanks for trying... Bob

You may want to try disabling the US Topo maps in step D above (as
opposed to selecting "Show None").
I believe the warning you received was in reference to the pre-loaded
Marine POI (points of interest)(which is not the base map). Again, as
far as I know, the base map cannot be overwritten. I have loaded many
maps (including Garmin's USTopo) onto my etrex Legend and have always
been able to access/recall the base map. The following will not bring
back your base map (since it is not really gone, just "covered" by
whichever map(s) you've loaded).
A search of Garmin's support FAQ
(http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/site/us/support/), yields the following:
Question: How can I reload the Marine Poi database that was erased from
my Legend when I loaded detailed maps?
Answer:
The eTrex Legend has 8 mb of internal memory for mapping data. The
Marine POI database that is loaded on the device from the factory is
installed on that 8mb of mapping memory. When other detailed maps are
loaded onto the device, this Marine POI database will be erased.
To reload the Marine POI database to the device, click on the link below:

The warning message refers to the Marine POI Database which includes
things like bouys, lights, obstructions, etc. This is what was
deleted when you downloaded the topo maps. You can recover that POI
database by downloading it at this page:
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/store/d...ID=173#Instruct
Note that the first download option there is for the Marine POI
database and the second one is for the Legend firmware. If you do
restore this POI database to your Legend, then the topo maps will
automatically be erased.
But, as mentioned previously, the basemap is still in your unit and
you just need to select the right menu options to turn off the display
of the topo maps and restore display of the basemap.
That would probably be better than restoring the Marine POIs since it
would allow you to toggle the more detailed topo maps on and off as
desired.

I just dug out my old blue Legend and found it does not, in fact, have the
handy hide/show maps menu of my newer units. The only way to hide the
detailed maps is to individually uncheck the individual map segments in the
map setup page. The only other option is "Show None", and that is what is
shows - nothing.

Even so, with only 8 MB of map memory space the number of map segments
will be small enough so unchecking them all shouldn't be much of a
problem.

For what it's worth...
On my old, blue Legend (using software version 3.70), if I go to the Map
Page (screen), select the "Setup Map" option, select the "i" icon (which
does indeed list all loaded maps with corresponding check marks), I can
then go up to the "Options" menu and select one of the following:
Show All
Show None
Restore Defaults
Show MetroGuide Nor
Show MetroGuide USA
Show US Topo
(This is because I have maps from MetroGuide North America v6,
MetroGuide USA v4, and US Topo v3 loaded into my unit.)
If I select "Show MetroGuide Nor" (MetroGuide North America v6), the
Legend will only show those MetroGuide North America v6 maps (all others
are automatically unchecked in the pull-down menu). If I select "Show
None," all maps in the pull-down menu are unchecked - BUT - I still have
access to the base map.

Interesting, so if you have only one map set loaded, you don't get the
show/hide option. I get only "Show all", "Show none", and "Restore
defaults". I have US Topo maps loaded and am also running unit software
3.70. (And I also have no basemap when I say show none.)

That's very strange... I would think that with maps loaded from just one
product (e.g., US Topo, MetroGuide USA, etc.), you would get a "Show
[Map Product]" in addition to the "Show All," "Show None," and "Restore
Defaults" (by the way, I can see no difference between "Show All" and
"Restore Defaults" as they both enable all maps). And I definitely have
the base map when I select "Show None." I wonder why two identical
models using the same software would operate differently? By the way, I
just performed a hard reset (which does not remove the maps) and
re-checked my results - they are as they were prior to the reset.
Curiouser and curiouser!

As a test, I loaded *only* maps from USTopo into my Legend and, like
you, only got "Show All," "Show None," and "Restore Defaults." However,
when I selected "Show None," I could still see the base map.
When I loaded *only* maps from MetroGuide North America v6, I got the
same result, just "Show All," "Show None," and "Restore Defaults."
Again, though, when I select "Show None," I could still see the base map.
So it appears that you need to have maps loaded from two or more
products to have those maps appear as a "Show [Map Product]" (which I
suppose does make sense).
The "Show None" base map/no base map is still a mystery to me.

Mea culpa. I wasn't zoomed out far enough to see the nearest U.S. highway.
I thought state routes would be on the basemap. Move on there is nothing to
see here...(as he slinks away in embarrassment)

How many times have we all been down *that* road!

| Too bad one can't have both maps...one would think you could just upload
the map to your mapsource and download it again with whatever maps you
have.

My old, blue Legend is the only GPS I own, so I am not looking to sell
it, at the moment.
But I'm confused (which, more and more, is not an unusual state of
affairs)... from this and other posts, I thought you already owned a Legend?

I do own a Legend but I'm going to return it. It was sold to me as new
but is clearly used. They conceded as much.
