Couple of NUVI 350 questions
|

| Howard Nelson 2007-08-25, 3:33 pm |
| 1. Is there a way to expand search radius it seems to be set to about 0.5
miles. As an example I am in a city and want directions to a restaurant
about 5 miles away. I know the neighborhood and name but not the address.
When I search for "food" the locations that come up are about 0.5 miles from
my current location and do not include the one I want 5 miles away.
Along the same vein. If I pan and zoom to the neighborhood where the
location I want is and then do a restaurant search the search defaults to my
current location rather than the location I zoomed to. I actually have to
drive to the neighborhood and then invoke a search to have the location show
up.
Am I doing something wrong? I could not find a fix in the documentation that
came with the Nuvi.
2. Just got the Nuvi 1 month ago and love it. It shipped with the old
database even though the 2008 had been released by Garmin. Is there a way to
get a free update to the current database from Garmin?
Thanks for any help

Keep looking and it expands the distance. I've gone over 20 miles. You can
also enter a starting location different than yours.

You are not reading the manual, let alone the prompts on the screen. It is
right in front of you.

Register on line, then sent them a note and ask for the upgrade.

Clarification.
It may have a limit as to the number of places under a given menu. When I
just hit "all food" it went a couple of screens to about five miles. When
I chose a particular cuisine, it would go as far as 47 miles under the
"barbecue" category. Looks like the 40 closest are listen but you can always
us the "near" button and change the search location.

Thanks for the help. Part of my problem is that I was in San Francisco and
the search stopped after about 40 or 50 restaurants and of course that only
covered 0.5 miles :). Will download the PDF manual (printed one didn't come
with unit) and teach myself about "near". Thanks

You can fold down the antenna to disable the GPS(might not be necessary) and
use the map to go to another location, then use the "set location" button to
establish the search center for a new search in that new location. If you
are in a high density area, there will be too many restaurants to list them
all, so you will have to select a sub-category, like Asian, to cut the
offerings down to a smaller sub-group that will increase the range of the
offerings listed following a search.
Try using the search feature when you set the location away from a city and
you will see that it can go out at least 50 miles to list a restaurant that
is a POI.

Skip the set location step. There is a button on the screen for choosing
the POI that allows you to choose a location. IIRC, it is "near" or
something like that.

Yes, seems to be a limit of 40. That is a lot of choices if you are near
the Arctic Circle, but very little in a major city.

Register it on line and if you need an update they will tell you and
send it to you automatically. (at least thats how it worked for me)

| I'm assuming by update you mean the MapSource program and corresponding City
Navigator NT .
Didn't work with me that way. I have a Nuvi 250 and I had to ask for the
update. They sent it within 10 days. ( Canada).

That's all I know I just did it 2 days ago so I don't know what they
