Author 60CSx 3.00 Firmware and MapSource !
JCE

H,

I found out a couple of things :

1. Latest MapSource still doesn't even let you create mapsets larger than
4GB
2. Latest firmware for 60CSx/76CSx still doesn't recognizes a mapset file
larger than 2GB ! I tried to create a 3.5GB mapset with about 1,600 files in
MapSource, which was successfully created and then transfered to a 4GB
Sandisk microSDHC card. After inserting the card into my 60CSx, the "card
info" ( Setup>System>Menu ) showed me the correct card size ( about 4GB )
and the correct used ( about 3.5 ), but could not read the card or file ! I
only could see the base map ( no other maps at all ) and could not select
any other maps.
3. There is still the 2000+ mapset limit on the 60CSx/76CSx after the 3.00
update !

Too bad they didn't include or fixed that.

Cheers,

JCE

Yea...BTW where are you finding the 3.00 update for the 60CSx? When I
go to "My Garmin" it says no update available...unless it has just shown
up in the last day.

I believe the GPS Chipset Type G Ver. 3.00 is currently only available
through the Garmin WebUpdater, although there doesn't appear to be any
listing of the changes made from version 2.90 to 3.00.

I think to use a 4 GB card, the 60/76 "x" series models will require a
software update that lets them use SDHC type memory cards. As of this
time, none of the "x" series models are SDHC compatible as afar as I know.

Hi Jack,

first to Pegleg's question..........3.00 is as "Deacon" stated ONLYille via
the Web Updater 1 I called Garmin several time and I am in e-mail contact
with them, but so far they couldn't provide any "changelog" between 2.90 and
3.00 !

Yeah, I was really hoping that the 3.00 firmware finally would enable SDHC
support on the 60/76 series........ I know they aren't compatible, so I
borrowed a 4GB SDHC card from a friend and tried it, which didn't work. But
strangely the 60CSx sees the 4GB !!! Several other devices ( Camera, MP3
players, etc. ) I have do not even recognize a 4GB card at all, or just show
2GB even if it is a 4GB card !! The 60CSx shows the 4GB card correctly, it
even shows the correct size of the map file, it just CAN'T read the file. So
I am wondering if the 60/76 series is already SDHC compatible, but the
software doesn't work right or isn't enabled !!!

Any thoughts ? ( I mean other that 10,000 people send Garmin a request
e-mail or call for SDHC support ! hahahahahaha )

I may be wrong, but I think the Chipset Type G update applies only to the
SiRF chip, not the Garmin software which operates the 60/76 units. We'll
have to wait and see if they update the current 3.50 firmware.

I can't explain why yours sees the 4 GB card. I have a generic,
unbranded, non-SDHC 4 GB SD card that is recognized as 4 GB in most
things I put it in. But it is not reliable and is erratic when it does
work.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Secur.../> ility_issues

It says there that "Some manufacturers have produced 4 GB SD cards that
conform to neither the SD2.0/SDHC spec nor existing SD devices". I
wonder if that could be the issue?

Good point Cooter, I had not noticed that the 3.00 firmware was in the
Additional software category, not the unit software. I don't use the
WebUpdater and had not gone online to check this when this thread started.

The unit software is still at 3.50 for the manual downloads, has anyone
seen anything that indicates there is a later version of the unit
software available via WebUpdater?

Not sure what the issue is either !! I EXCLUSIVELY and ONLY use Sandisk
cards in all my devices ( Camera, video, MP3, Phones, etc. ) and most of them
are not compatible with SDHC and so I use the regular "not-ultra" 2GB cards
which work in ALL my devices. This 4GB Card I tried in my 60CSx was also a
Sandisc card, but a 4GB SDHC !!!
I copied the maps on through an USB adapter on my Notebook and then put the
4GB microSDHC in the 60CSX. Both, Notebook and 60CSX reported the correct
file size, free and occupied space. All my other devices did not even
recognize ANY SDHC card at all !!! Only one of my MP3 players is SDHC
compatible and I can use 4GB microSDHC's in there !

So that logically tells me the 60CSx with the new firmware 3.00 ( not
certain about the 2.90 ) at least is SDHC compatible. Maybe it's like
"Cooter" suggested, that the problem is the current 3.50 software which
cannot read larger files than 2GB +/- !!!!!!

And like I know Garmin, they probably update the 3.50 software to 3.51 to
make it read 4GB microSDHC cards, but they probably forget to increase the
2000+ file limit !!!!! And by the time all these issues are fixed, the
60CSx will be obsolete and Garmin brings out a new device !! LOL LOL LOL

Cheers,

JCE

When I received my 60CSx on Monday, 12/10/07, one of the first things I
did was use the WebUpdater to update the unit (I believe the unit
shipped with [the current] GPSMAP 60CSx Ver. 3.50 and [the previous] GPS
Chipset Type G Ver. 2.90). On 12/10/07, the WebUpdater for the 60CSx
installed the following:

Unit Software:
GPSMAP 60CSx Ver. 3.50

Additional Software:
GPS Chipset Type G Ver. 3.00

That is exactly the case. I posted the following on Nov. 19. Since
some of you apparently didn't see it, I'll post it again. The only
update is that cards up to 6 GB have now been used.

This post <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/
Garmin_GPSmap_76C/message/5854> to the 76C(Sx) Yahoo group says that
as far back as May 2007 and Firmware 3.30, the 76x units "worked"
with
4GB cards. That is, the units would recognize and use the card.

However, if you read on in the same thread, you will find that there
is still a limit of 2GB on maps loaded on the card. If you try to
load more than 2GB of maps on the card, the unit doesn't see any of
the maps. That may be why some have reported that it doesn't work.

The same author also posted a screen capture showing the "Card Info"
page statistics with a 4GB card plugged in; but I think you have to
join the group to see that. You don't have to join to read the
posts.

Hi,

well, good to get some confirmation on that, even if it isn't from Garmin !
:)

Now the "One-Million-Dollar-Question" would be : "WHY the heck would Gamin
enable SDHC support back in May 2007, but keep the file limit at 2GB"
???????? That doesn't make sense at all.

Ohhhh well, maybe they'll do a software update in the near future........
( but I guess people are hoping for that since last May !!!! )

Cheers,

JCE

Whatda think it???

I think there must be something ain't right because *if* Garmin releases
newer version than v3.0 they just released few weeks ago, it shouldn't jump
from v3.00 to v3.50.

But I may be wrong.
JCE

Hi,

just to clarify it :

The firmware version went a few weeks ago from 2.90 to the 3.00 version.
The software version is still 3.50 !

Software and Firmware is different !

bob why don't you go to main menu on your 60CSx then click on set up
then click on system then menue again and click on unit software at
bottom to see what is listed for the unit software and gps chipset? If
it shows 2.90 for the chipset then you hjave to run webupdater for
additional software updates after it says you have latest software
loaded. I have 3.00 for the gps chipset and 3050 for the unit
software.

Jerry,
My 60CSx displays this somewhat differently that what you seem to describe:
Software Version 3.50
GPS SW Version 3.00
Unit ID..........

I don't see a mention of "chipset" . My interpretation of this is that the
"Software Version" is what used to generally be called the firmware version.
I guess that " GPS SW version" is what you mean by "chipset" version??

Hi Tom,

It can be found at

<http://www8.garmin.com/support/coll...ct=010-00422-00>

Unfortunately, the new version (3.00) can't be downloaded directly
from Garmin's website like former versions; one (still?) has to use
Garmin's Webupdater to get it :-(.

GPS SW Version 3.00 is the chipset version. Here is how it is shown on
the 60 CSx update page: GPS Chipset Type G Ver. 2.90 as of Nov 27,
2006 . Below is the link to show you what I am saying.

Jerry,
I see what you mean on the Garmin site. That still does not quite answer
this question: does the "GPS SW version" as displayed by the receiver
correspond to the "GPS Chipset Type G Ver." that appears on the Garmin
website?

If your 60CSx GPS SW Version shows 2.90 yes it is the same as shown on
the update page but it appears that only way to get updates later then
2.90 is to use the WebUpdater. I have GPS SW Version 3.00 installed
for quite some time when it first was available from the WebUpdater.

My 60 CSx used to have a GPS firmware version 2.90. Following your
suggestion, I have downloaded Garmin WebUpdater and ran the update.
Now, when I check the FW version, the display shows "Vers. SW GPS"
0.21 (!!!!????). Apparently, the WebUpdater downgraded the GPS SW
version from 2.90 to 0.21. No sign of version 3.00.

Does anybody know what went wrong with that Garmin update?

Thanks for your help
