Installing MapSource on non-C drive - how?
|
|
| Jim Sanchez 2007-12-29, 3:33 pm |
| It seems that Garmin insists on installing all their software on the C:
drive. My computer is setup with windows on the E: drive and a small C:
partition for DOS. This behavior is really annoying and not consistent
with how you should program for windows.
Thanks to all

I've never done it with the Mapsource, but I've done it with
the topos and I don't see why it wouldn't work with what you
want to do. Worst case would be a delete and reinstall.
You should be able to put the GARMIN folder containing all
the maps on the drive you want and manually change the
registry settings for the program to look for it there.
It should be under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->Software->Garmin
Mapsource->Families
To edit the registry, Start->Run and enter regedit
But be *very* careful, the last thing you wanna do is hose
the registry. Make *sure* that you're editting the right reg
key.
Jack, sound like it'll work?

I didn't have a problem installing on a different drive to C.
Don't recall exactly how I did it but seem to recall that I just
pointed it at E drive and in it went...
Can you discribe why it's not letting you install on a different
drive, surely part way through the install it gives you the option to
alter where to install it, everything else does even Windows...

I have the same problem here as the original poster. Mapsource from
the CD (3.00) that came with my GPS 60CSx just barfs with an error:
"Invalid drive: C:\". My Windows XP is in the E: drive.
I tried to modify the registry as explained in the garmin site, using
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->Software->Garmin->Mapsource->Products and then
InstallDir, but that made no difference at all. That page even acks
that "it may not work and we have no other solution". fsck, just
release a patch, accept a path in the command line, etc.
It's really annoying to have to deal with this in 2008.
Sigh.

| Have you tried it with the latest and greatest off Garmin's site? (my C
drive is C, so I can't test)
To get it to install (without a previous version of mapsource already
installed) download/install Garmin Training Center first, and then
download/install Mapsource. (then install your detailed maps)

Have you tried using the subst command in aCommand Prompt window to create an
alias to E: named C:? It's hokey, but it just might work.

That may work. If it does, make sure to put the subst
command in your autoexec.bat file. Reboots "nuke" the alias.
Not sure why regedit didn't work though. That's how I got
mapsource to use the topos on my hard drive.

Did you try to install it to "C:\Program Files\Garmin" instead of
"C:\Garmin"?

Nope. Mine is working right now. Just making suggestions.
I suppose I could have tried to stick it in C:\program files\garmin, but I
don't have a problem with it in C:\garmin (although I have to admit thats a
little non-standard). Are people having trouble getting it to go to
C:\program files\garmin?

It will put some of the stuff there but in the long run it is easier to
not fight with their setup programs about it. Any MapSource install
program (setup.exe) will want to try put the MapSource program install
and the USB drivers install in the \garmin folder off of the root even
when installing a MapSource product somewhere else. Some will use the
d: drive and some will not.
I recently copied the CDs for MetroGuide 4.02, U.S. Topo 3.01, and World
Map 3.01 all to a working folder on a D: drive in order to run installs
from there. That would keep it from asking me to put CD's in later to
use the MetroGuide mapping. And in this case, I also wanted to have all
the mapping on the D: drive (in the d:\garmin folder).
But Garmin won out, at least partially, in the end. I wound up with
MetroGuide and U.S. Topo in c:\garmin and World Map in d:\garmin. The
reasons were that MG 4.02 setup does not offer you a chance to change
the destination drive. And the patch for U.S. Topo that fixes an error
will not find and update the U.S. Topo program anywhere except in the
c:\garmin folder. So I installed Topo to the d: drive and then
uninstalled it and reinstalled to the c: drive so I could run that patch.
I also later installed City Navigator North America and BlueChart
Americas (installed those from the DVDs) and was allowed to redirect
them to the d:\garmin folder.
As it happened, I also wound up the MapSource program files in the
c:\garmin folder. I think that is because I installed MG 4.02 first and
it put it there. The later installs upgraded MapSource to later versions
and honored that same location as did the update when I brought
MapSource up to 6.13.6.
I may have been able to get the MapSource files on the D: drive by
installing CNNA first and installing it to the d: drive.
I'm just trying to space used about equal on both partitions on a drive
that has two 60GB partitions. I don't know why but a new Fujitsu laptop
I bought came with a 120 GB hard drive in two 60 GB partitions.
Yeah, I know, I'm a little queer for mapping but I enjoy something about
each of these that is not in all of them. for example, I like some of
the details on the Tele-Atlas data used in MetroGuide. It has a lot
more of the smaller lakes, more hills, mountains, railroads, and some
other stuff. City Navigator with NavTeq's data is pretty barren (but
more up to date on roads) in comparison.
