GPS Chipset Type M2 (Region File) software version 2.60 as of January
3, 2007
I installed this update through WebUpdater and no info is available
about the update. Probably fixes oddometer problem at slow walking
speed. When WebUpdater says update successful my unit hung at
transferring data but just turn unit off and restart and unit will
read 2.60 on the gps sw version.

I installed the updated software last night and did a 10 km XC ski today
to see if the tripmeter problem was fixed.

Result? Sorry, I'm unable to say. For the first time since I've had my
Vista HCx it lost the trail, not once, but in two separate places. I'm
not blaming the software upgrade yet because in winter I strap the Vista
under my jacket to keep the batteries warm. Although this setup has been
100% reliable up to now it's always possible that the Vista somehow got
twisted around and lost signal. Unlikely but possible.

I'll try to do some more testing this weekend.

Has anyone else had a chance to test the upgrade?

Cheers,
Angus

I use Lithium AAs in cold temperatures. They work well down to -40 and will
last much longer than alkalines. You also might need to set the backlight
to "stay on" to keep the unit warm - though the batteries run down faster of
course.

Another data point from a 2 hr walk in flat terrain:
Tracklog 12.4 km
Odometer 12.6 km

I'm starting to think the odometer problem has been fixed.

Agreed, but lithium batteries are a bit extravagant for everyday use. I
save them for special occasions only. That means a multiday ski tour
each winter. Then they go into the avalanche beacon as well as the gpsr.

Angus,

great to hear that!
but what about the other problem you had:
[color=darkred]

did you find out the cause?
did it happen again?
