City Navigator NT vs non-NT: compatibility with Edge 705

| Hello all,
I will receive my first GPS (Garmin Edge 705) as soon as it is
available.
In the meantime I bought City Navigator Europe v9 on Ebay.
Argh! I just realised that it is the regular version, not the NT one.
Number is 007-00278-06
Garmin says that the only difference between NT and non-NT is the
compression algorithm: I understand that NT is newer, so I guess it
compresses better.
Apart from size matters, will the non-NT version work with my Edge
705? Or does it *need* the improved compression algorithm?
Is the compression so dramatically different? The Edge 705 has a mini-
SD slot, so I will buy either a 1Gb or a 2Gb memory card. Will I
encounter any problem with the non-NT version?
Thanks,
Federico

You can check the MapSource compatibility of your device on the Garmin
page for the device. Or you can go to the Garmin page for the MapSource
product and check the compatibility of that with a list of hardware
devices.
The NT mapping stores in about half of the space as do the non-NT maps
for the North American mapping. I'd assume that holds true for other
areas of the world too.

Your non-NT maps will not quite fit on a 2 meg card. Just decide where
you are least likely to go, or get a second card and make overlapping
maps. Tape the second card inside the battery cover, if there is room.
These cards are so cheap it is not a big deal except for the time wasted
loading the card.

City Navigator Europe non-NT is *not* listed as compatible, while the
NT version is listed as such.
However, there are some City Navigor products (e.g. Australia and New
Zealand) for which there is no NT version available, and the non-NT
versions are listed as compatible with the Edge 705.
So I guess this means that there is no technical incompatibility, just
that Garmin recommends the NT version whenever possible.

I guess this won't be a problem, since I will use my Edge 705 on my
bike and my bike trips will fit within a single European country :)
When/if I travel abroad, I will buy another SD card. Anyway, thanks
for the advice!
Bye,

I think the issue is that if you buy a NT version it might not work with
some (generally older) models. Whereas, the non-NT version might work
with an older model and a newer models too. So if you wanted buy
additional unlocks, you'd have to make sure you had a version that would
work with all your models and that may require a non-NT version.
I generally buy the non-NT versions because I have a couple of older
models I still use.
