Author Any new voices for the Nuvi 250?
Father Guido

Hi,

I'm a newbie, with my first GPS (nuvi 250), all I see are two English
voices (USA & UK). Both are female. I've searched the Garmin site, but
haven't found anything. Are there new voices, i.e. male that I can
download? If so, how do I get them.

Thanks,

Norm

PS Can I, or should I delete all the non-English languages from my GPS
if I never intend to use them?

I've used them a couple of times when I was going to be visiting another
country. It gives you a little familiarity listening to that language
beforehand.

Norm,

You can delete any voices that you don't use. Just don't delete the folder
garmin/voices on your nivi 250.

Thanks guys, I guess I'll keep the foreign languages.

Do either of you know if their are any English languages other than
the UK/USA female voices?

There is a male english voice called Jack. Use the tools/language
option and scroll both up and down and you will find Jack. Jack is
also a TTS, so if your GPS receiver converts text to speech, Jack will
do that as well as Jill.

Hmmm, I have 40 voices/languages to pick from but no Jack/Jill or
Aussie voices in the list. I would have thought the US may have had
several English voices to cover the South, Texas, Boston etc. accents.

Are you in Australia? Mine has 40 voices/languages, but only UK/USA
female English voices. Another fellow said he also had Jack and Jill.
Go figure. Thanks!

I'm in the US and a Nuvi 350. I have the Jack and Jill also.

There are differences in the languages also. the heading will read RT 395.
In the US voice, it will say "take route three ninety-five south" In the
British voice, is will say "take ar-tee three hundred and ninety-five south"

Hmmm, interesting, I'll have to investigate this Jack and Jill some
more. Thanks for your help.

With the speaker size, you might find a male voice to be rather tinny
and more like listening to a cell phone on speaker mode than something
usable. All the voices I've tried are female, I have a feeling that
may be by design given the audio device your nuvi has at it's disposal
(less than 1", would have a hard time qualifying as a tweeter on
anything larger than a clock radio).

The nature of my work leaves me scrambling for addresses all day, so I
get to listen to my nuvi prattle on in the same voice for about 8-12
hours a day every day. Sometimes listening to it in another language
is good just to break pace.

I really kind of wish they had also included a set of tones similar to
subway or light rail chimes instead of voice instructions for audio
cues. I know they can do it: That's how the nuvi gets your attention
to proximity alerts and overspeed warnings already...

I think they went with the pacific northwest/northern midwestern
accent because it's neutral, well paced and easy to understand if
you're not used to hearing it. It's the same reason why, for the most
part, American based call centers end up in the northwest or the
northern midwest.

Another possible explanation with the accent of choice is that they're
based in Kansas and went with what they knew. :o)

Can anyone tell me how to identify the voice files in the software please?
Is it a common file type or unique to Garmin? I too was hoping to find some
alternative voices.

On the Garmin GPS it is under tools/languages.
Garmin also has the ability to download languages to some GPS units
such as the Street Pilot 340, see http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.=
jsp?product=3D010-00401-20
=2E I do not know if these languages will work on other Garmin GPS
units? It includes the Jack-TTS.

Cool, I'll try installing one and see what happens. My GPS doesn't
read street names, so maybe these files won't work, but I'll give it a
try anyway.

I live in Texas where we have Farm to Market (FM) roads. I had
selected the Australian voice and it interprets "FM" as meaning
"Federated States of Micronesia" which made me look at the map twice.
