Is it possible to back up the maps from a Nuvi 2xx to load them
into mapsource on the PC?

No, the mapping that is in on *.img file on the GPS receiver has nothing
in common with the *.img files seen in a MapSource install. The *.img
files in MapSource are processed, compiled, and uploaded to create the
bit *.img file and there is no way that I've ever heard of to reverse
the process.

MapSource's Transfer menu suggests that it will download maps from a GPS
receiver but in reality, all it downloads is a list of the names of the
maps that were selected to create the map image file on the receiver.
