Getting .IMG maps onto my eTrex Legend HCx

| I've downloaded several maps of Japan in the .IMG format. I brought
them into mapsend20 and created a GMAPSUPP.IMG file. I then created a
"Garmin" directory on the SD card, and copied GMAPSUPP.IMG to that
directory. I disconnected the GPS from the USB port, pressed "menu",
selected "setup map", them moused over the "i" (for info) icon. No
maps are listed...
I also tried a plain old download from mapsend20. That didn't seem to
work either. It recognized the GPS and "downloading" flashed on the
GPS screen, but I still couldn't find any maps.
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks!

I have had a case where I needed to have a map sent from mapsource first
before the GPS would look for a GMAPSUPP.IMG file. Have you ever loaded a
map using mapsource to this GPS?

If you did not get an error when you power up the GPS, it would seem to
imply that the GPS found the gmapsupp.img file and has no problems with
it.
Then, when you go to the map info page, if you press Menu again it will
bring up the menu where you can toggle each map product from on (Hide)
to off (Show).
You can usually leave the Basemap and Marine Points Database (if it is
there) on (displaying Hide) but if there are any other maps there will
be a pecking order or hierarchy for which one will display. And only
one will display at a time.
So if you went to the show/hide menu and saw your map listed, then chose
Hide All, and then chose Show (your maps), it should display your maps
if they are good.
I don't think the folder or file names are case sensitive but I've
always found mine to be in all lower case. So making the path to the
map file \garmin\gmapsupp.img may change something too.
