Author setting the GPS to take points automatically

Hello!! I am new to GPS and I have read the manual, but I cannot make
the GPS take points automatically every 20metres. I set the track to
0.02km distance and I have a track saved but the only point I have is
the initial I took myself.

I don't see them on waypoints in teh GPS itself (except mine) and I
downloaded the track to ArcGIS and it's there, but no points!!!

Can someone help me...

Thanks..

Download the track without saving it. Yes, it is possible.

When you save the track within the GPSR, the points are condensed.

The gps will *not* automatically make *waypoints*, but it will create
*trackpoints* based on your track setup. I do not use ArcGIS, so I do not
know how it handles trackpoints and what you can do with them. If you want
to view the trackpoint data as text (the lat, lon, elevation numbers) and
ArcGIS won't do that, you can use the freeware g7toWin from this website
http://www.gpsinformation.org/ronh/g7towin.htm

As another poster already said, if you want to preserve the complete dataset
*do not save the track in the gps* before downloading to your computer.

gpsbabel is able to convert trackpoints to waypoints.

Thanks Marcus, that is good to know. I have used gpsbabel for a number of
things but had forgotten or never known that one.

Trackpoints and waypoints are 2 different things and you seem to have
them confused together. Read the manual.

You omitted stating what gps you are using, but usually you record
tracks - point by point without a name - automatically, and waypoints
- single points at a significant location, usually with a name to
identify them later - manually as you want them to occur.

Some gps units are able to set the zoom level at which tracks and/or
waypoints are shown, even as they are recorded, so you might not see
your track or waypoint on the gps even though it is recording.
