GPS navigation routes

| I just hooked up a Garmin 200 W. This is my first unit and don't have
any experience with navigation units. I tested it by entering my
address. It had me exiting about 5 exits early on the freeway. I set
it up for shortest route option, but the route it suggested i take
seemed out of the way. Can i download a more accurate map? Also, isn't
the lock button supposed to prevent the screen from losing data? I
noticed in this mode, there aren't any speech prompts. Is this normal
in the locked mode or is it supposed to have speech?

Shortest is not the fastest. Check the distance for shortest and fastest
for the same source/destination.

No. It's not that the map is inaccurate (although no doubt it is, to
some extent) but your estimate for the best route is not necessarily
either the fastest or the shortest, which it what the unit is told, by
you, to calculate.

Don't know what you mean.

No idea. Never used it in locked mode. AFAIK the locked mode is to stop
you being tempted to "play" with it while driving or accidentally
pressing the touch screen and changing/stopping the route.

First of all, there is only one map and it is fairly accurate. There may be
an update if you happen to have the older version. Check that on the Garmin
web page. Register your unit and you may be eligible for a free upgrade.
You may be confusing shortest versus fastest. Often the freeway is much
faster, but, (having it set for shoretest) if the computer finds a route
that is 1/10th mile shorter it will route you that way. Computers use
algorithims to decide the route, not common sense. They are very good at
getting you where you want to go, but it is not always the "best" way.
Change your setting to "fastest" and see if it takes you the same way. Put
the points in Mapquest and see if you get similar results.

I'm not familiar with lock mode. Isn't that the security mode to prevent
use if stolen?

It's supposed to prevent the screen from being changed while you
drive, but my question was, if the voice prompt suppose to work in
that mode. I'll check with Garmin.I'll check Mapquest and see if their
route is different. Thanks.

| Please make sure you haven't accidently activated the 'mute' control
on your nuvi. It does happen.

hey tested one while i waited and they did not get a voice prompt either. Th=
ey checked with the engineers and apparently they aren't programmed to have =
voice prompts while locked. The locked postion is to prevent the screen fro=
m losing data in case you want to disconnect the unit and take it with you.
