I plan to shop for a Garmin GPS Thanksgiving weekend. It appears there will
be good sales on the C330 and maybe the C340.

I read a post that said regarding the Nuve 200 "However, some people
reported in GSP forum that the Nuvi 200 with serial # 14H06xxxx and
14H10xxxx have the old (version v8) map software, and the ones with serial #
14H15xxxx and 14H17xxxx have the new (version 2008) map software.

Does anyone have this information on the C330 and C340? It also stated the
serial number is on the box.

you can call Garmin before you purchase and ask if it comes with the older
map do I get a free upgrade.
I am sure they will tell you that you do. The c340 is the has all the
basics.

The C340 speaks the name of the streets. I recomend that one over the
the C330. If you get a Nuvi, again I would suggest getting one that
speaks the name of the streets.

No c330 will have the newest maps. The c330's hard drive is too small
to hold the complete new version of the North America map, so it's been
discontinued. If you get it and then argue Garmin into mailing you the
update anyway, you'll only be able to install +either+ the continental
USA +or+ Canada.

Not so Jeffery. I have posted the procedure different times in this forum and
others. I have a C330 and have the complete 2008 map offering installed, using
an SD card.

Hey, you should know......can you find my previous posting by using this?

I am happy to be corrected, I never saw that prior message. Garmin
said that the +update+ software cannot be installed onto an SD card,
only the full version of MapSource.

Thanks for all the information. I may buy the c330 if I can get at
Wal-Mart's $129 advertised price for Black Friday. Otherwise I'll wait for
the Nuvi 200W, which I like.

Regarding the maps I can settle for the continental US.

According to your prior posting, Canada/Alaska will fit on a 512. Is
the compression a variable amount? Because without actually installing
anything, with a 2G card in my reader it wanted to use ~155MB. I
aborted, swapped in a 128M card I had laying around (I use that 2G
card) and it all fit in less than 95MB. Or is it not including as many
POIs in order to fit the smaller card?

And, additional info: I did it without the Garmin being plugged in.

You lost me there Jeffery. There is no variable compression as such. The
program "MapInstall" that comes with the 2008 CD has a very pronounced
'thermometer' running vertical along the right side of the window. What you
have to do is select EACH state, territory or province and 'build' your map. As
you go along, the thermometer rises until it tops out and turns red. That's how
you can experiment with different SC cards to see what will fit and what won't.

I never lost any previously installed custom POI's and the DVD claims the 2008
disc contains "over 6 million points of interest", which are installed according
to the states/provinces you add to your compilation.

I'm a nut for custom POI's such as "all the NASCAR tracks", "all the Tim Hortons
coffee shops", "all Flying J truck stops" (diesel) etc. etc. I know that all of
Canada & Alaska fits on a 512 SD card. That's why I reasoned that if I
installed Canada & Alaska on the GPS proper, I would be left with vast amounts
of room for fooling around with custom POI's.

I put the USA on a 2-gb SD card but if I recall it would have fit on a 1-gb.

Something you do NOT do, is remove OR install the SD card into the GPS with it
turned on! I learned the hard way. You risk the chance of wiping out the
contents of the SD card. Much like using the "Safely Remove Hardware" provision
for USB devices. Don't take a chance.

Yep, couldn't miss it. That's how I knew how much space the selected
maps were going to take on the two different sized cards. And since
the resulting map set was rendered into a single file, I very much
doubt that file system slack space / block size would account for the
roughly 50 megabyte difference.

> have to do is select EACH state, territory or province and 'build' your map. As

Yep, did that. Very intuitive. Hover the cursor over and see what
gets highlighted. Click it and see that it's now selected. Lather,
rinse repeat. :)

I was expecting the 128M card to do exactly that. It didn't. Using
the 2008 maps, I selected every Canadian province, Alaska and Hawaii.
On the larger card, it said it would take about 155 megs. On the
smaller one it said it would take about 95 megs. Same items were
selected.

I wouldn't expect you to loose any +custom+ POIs, those are stored on
the unit's internal drive. I was wondering if it left out "smaller"
POIs from the MapSource database.

Apparently, they fit on a 128M card.

> installed Canada & Alaska on the GPS proper, I would be left with vast amounts

I don't think it works that way. From what I read elsewhere, there is
a finite amount of space for user-programmed POIs. What that limit is,
I don't know, but it's irrelevant to the size of the installed map
data.

> I put the USA on a 2-gb SD card but if I recall it would have fit on a 1-gb.

Yep. The c330 has 1G of internal storage, so if you could put it onto
the internal, then it would fit on a 1G card.

Hi

I phoned Garmin yesterday and they said the same thing; ONLY Canada OR
the US maps on the 2008 NA update can be installed on the c330 but not
both. They also said that software CANNOT be installed onto a blank SD
card as it is an update and needs data already present on the SD card
"to update".

I am not familiar with MapSource. Can I download this or do I have to
pay? In previous postings, another contributor wrote that running "Map
Install" with the 2008 Update will allow you to copy 1 of the regions
on to the SD card.

If someone can provide ALL of the requirements needed for this
transfer onto a SD card and do this in a step-by-step manner it would
be greatly appreciated

Ha, don't take a chance. To 'prove' that I did in fact have the US on my SD
card, I set a destination to a friend of mine in Lake Worth Florida. I selected
the destination and instead of hitting "GO" I selected "View Map". It shows in
full detail. Then I removed the SD card and the base map is all that remains. I
then inserted the card and the full detail appeared again. Then I was showing
somebody the same thing, and when I put the card in again, the detail wasn't
there. I had to put the US mapping back on the card. It's never failed since,
because I don't take it out, at least when it's on.

Dan, I don't care WHAT Garmin says. Think of all the new GPS's they sold since
people 'upgraded' from their C330's! Anyhow, here's the text I posted a while
ago in this forum. As you likely have read recently, I've been chatting with
Jeffery Kaplan as well regarding this procedure. :

********************

c330 2008 map update
I have just finished installing ALL of the Map Update 2008 City Navigator North
America NT on my Garmin C330. Once I got my head around what was actually
happening, I'd like to outline the procedure.

The 2008 CD installs a program called "MapInstall" on your computer to be used
later. Don't forget.

-Your are asked to select between Canada (incl. Alaska & northern border states)
OR lower 49 states (incl. Puerto Rico), which replaces the map info in the C330.

-Now then, I have tried BOTH, but which one you load depends on what size of SD
card you have, or want to buy. I can tell you that if you load the US/Puerto
Rico map, you can put ALL of Canada on a 512 mb SD card. If you load
Canada/Alaska, you can get away with a 1-gig SD card, but I had a 2-gig.

-At any rate, after loading your map, you will go to the program "MapInstall".
Do NOT put the SD card in your GPS, but make sure it's on & the USB cable
attached. I have a Lexar USB SD card reader. When you start MapInstall, you will
see both devices. Select the "Removable disk". You then have to select each
state or province individually to 'create' your 'secondary' map. It's easier to
zoom in a bit on the North American map. When your selection is done, you send
the info to the SD card in the USB reader. This takes some time, about 45
minutes to an hour.

When it's finished, remove the SD card from the reader & install it in the slot
of the GPS. That's all there is. You do NOT have to select either map. You end
up with a seamless North American/Puerto Rico map just like before. You'd never
know that you had changed anything. All your previous waypoints etc are there.

Like I said, I loaded Canada to the GPS, then the US to the SD card. I just
selected my friend's place in Lake Worth Florida as a destination. I touched
"Show Map" before Go! and voila, there it was, 2485.1 km away. I then removed
the SD card and the mapping goes away. Stick it in & you're back in business. I
don't know why I'd want to take it out from now on. I download the Florida
waypoint from MapSource, so your POi's must be on the GPS proper.

Well, I'm not planning on removing the card again since I've shown to

Hi

Can you tell me what program I run concurrently with the 2008 Updater
to get one of the regions on the SD?? Is it Map Install or Map Source?
I checked all the software that I had on my computer hard drive and I
do not have either program after using the 2008 Update. According to
the other postings, I should have at least have Map Install on my hard
drive after using the update.

Thanks for your help

MapSource hosts the various optionally purchased Garmin mapping
packages. It is installed by the various MapSource mapping packages
(City navigator, U.S. Topo, etc.) if it is not already present when you
run setup for those.

Basically, the setup program installs the data, MapSource is the host
application for viewing and using the data.

You can download free updates from Garmin to get to the latest version
of MapSource. But you cannot download MapSource itself.

There may be another way to get MapSource. I've heard that you can
download and install the free Garmin Training Center software

http://www8.garmin.com/support/down...ails.jsp?id=835

and then download and run the latest MapSource update and it will give
you a MapSource install. You can get the MapSource update here:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/down...ails.jsp?id=209

I've not actually gotten a MapSource install by doing that, it would be
interesting to hear if it works.

Dan, MapInstall SHOULD have been added to your programs and an icon put on your
desktop when you went through the "Map Update 2008 City Navigator North America

from left centre to upper right.

First of all, take a look in "Start / Programs / Garmin / and see what's there.
I'm betting it is. If so, right click and send it to the desktop.

That's all I can offer right now. I "explored" the installation DVD and can
find "MapInstall" specifically. It's obviously buried in there somewhere.

I started this thread inquiring about the c330 and c340. I bought the c340
at Circuit City online on Thanksgiving day at their Black Friday price + tax
with free s/h. Received it yesterday 11/26. Fortunately it has the latest
map installed. I'm a newbie and haven't road tested it yet. Also ordered the
Garmin Dash Mount yesterday from Amazon. Thanks to the many in the group who
gave information on the c340.

Hey Budman,

I want to try this procedure on my c330, by putting the USA on the GPS
harddrive, and Canada/Alaska on a 1Gb (at least) SD card.

One question though -- Does the SD card have to be brand new? What if
it's already been used in a digital camera and has been formatted for
that camera? In that case just re-format it with WinXP?

Thanks!
