I have just taken delivery of my new Etrex Vista HCx and am looking to
get a 2 or 4 GB card.

Can anyone advise me as to whether it is worth getting the new Sandisk
premier and are there any issues using these cards as I know the
Ultras had issues with the old Vista Cx

Cheers

My Experience:
You can upload to the card max 2025 maps. Garmin restriction.
That's max 200 MB.
You will never need any card bigger than 256 MB

Wrong.

I put the german topo and parts of the city navigator europe (Germany and
some maps of western europe) onto may Vista HCx.

These maps size is nearly 2 GB and fills my 2 GB SD-Card completely.

I do not know wether the Vista HCx is able to handle the SDHC-Cards which
seams to be standard for SD-Cards of more than 2 GB memory size.

You are right about the 2,025 being the maximum number of segments or
maps that you can select in MapSource and upload. But there is not a
200 MB limit. I have uploaded maps right to the limit of a 2 GB card as
long as I keep the files at less than 2,025 it is fine.

With more then 2,025 it will sometimes process the upload and appear
normal but some of the maps will not be there. Other times it will take
a very long time to process the upload and it may fail during the
process or after you start the GPS.

How does one know how many segments one has within one *.img file?

As segments are selected in MapSource, you can see the names of the
selected segments (maps) on the Map tab and the number and size of the
selection is listed at the bottom of that tab. If you are not seeing
those tabs, select Show User Data Tabs from the View menu.

The actual size of the upload will vary from the size listed there, it
will usually be a little bit larger.

You can select segments from more than one MapSource product and they
will just be added to the selections from the previous products. If you
click on the "Area" column it will resort all the selected segments
alphabetically and grouped by the MapSource product names.

Thanks! 2000 is a LOT.

I don't think this would be an issue for most people unless they need to
travel by vehicle cross country on a regular basis. In that case, I
would think having a laptop in your vehicle with a GPS unit connected to
it would be the best alternative.

You're right about it not being a problem for most. The only mapping
product that normally would cause you to exceed the 2,025 limit is U.S.
Topo. That has over 6,600 segments in it. The segments are grouped
into U.S. East, U.S. West, Alaska, and Hawaii. The East and West groups
are each up around 2,500 segments and Alaska is around 1,500.

All of the U.S. Topo segments only total up to about 1.8 GB so if I
wanted to travel and have all the street and highway and topo mapping
with me, I would load three 1 GB cards by selecting regions of mapping
that contained both the CN and Topo mapping for that region. Then I
would change microSD card as I moved from one region to the next.

I really like being able to have two or three kinds of mapping on the
GPS and change from one to the other on the fly.

City Navigator North American only has about 350 segments in it and the
NT version only has about 50.
