Either via USB or in-car? There is no info anywhere on this.

Thanks.

Hi, Sam.
It is about 3-4 hours.

Until it is completely charged. Couple of hours usually does it and it
shuts off. In the car it will charge under use and keep it topped up.

When I emailed Garmin Tech support about the speed of three methods of
recharging my Nuvi 770, I was told that the USB takes about eight hours to
charge versus 4 hours for the 12v car adapter or the a/c adapter. ...And
the USB method requires you to ensure your computer does not go to standby
or hibernate.

(Since the charge is supposed to be uninterrupted to reset the battery bars,
unless you have a very long commute, the a/c adapter that is NOT included
with the 770 is the needed accessory of the day.)

I was unable to get an answer on charging speed if you are using it, say
while downloading audio books or MP3, or planning routes.

If anyone has further info on this, please post.

Thanks everyone. I let it charge for 3 hours and I still had the image
of the computer plugged into the Nuvi. That's a real mickey mouse system
on behalf of Garmin. Why they still keep on using USB 1.x is mind
boggling to me.

If it takes 8 hours, that's too long. Any idea where (besides Ebay) one
can buy a generic mini-USB plug to AC?

Garmin's charging cable is not generic. It has a different resistor
between one of the wires and ground.

This allows the NUVI to recognize when it is connected to a computer and
needs to set up a data link, or when it is connected to a charger, and can
function in GPS mode. When it is connected to a standard USB cable, it
goes into data link mode. You need the special Garmin charging cable to
stay in GPS mode.

On some models you can fool the NUVI by putting it in diagnostic mode
first, then connecting a generic charger. When you come out of diagnostic
mode, it will remain in GPS mode, and not set up for data linkage.

Interesting. I read somewhere that a Nuvi owner was able to plug in his
Samsung cell phone charger that uses a mini-usb connector and it charged
without problem or manipulation. Looks like I'll probably have to get a
Garmin AC adapter from Ebay, something I would rather not do.

I don't know if this applies to your Nuvi or your setup, but here goes: Once
your Nuvi is connected to power (intended for charging), and the screens and
all that come up, turn the Nuvi off. What you may then get is a dark screen
with faint or white letters saying something like "going into charging
mode." That's how it works with my 350 when I'm using it with the supplied
AC adapter, at least.

I find the bit about standby surprising. I was going to make up a relay
driven by my PC's USB 5v output to switch off accessory items when the PC
was "off". Until I realised that the 5v is present in standby too. My PDA
shows the charging light accordingly. But my finding only applies to 2 out
of 2 PCs.

It probably does. The 650 as I understand is exactly the same as the 350
but with a larger screen. Perhaps a bit faster CPU. I'll have to try it
out the next the Nuvi needs charging. In the meantime, I'm searching
online for a Nuvi AC adapter.

You can get a AC charger (Garmin) for the 660 at
http://www.gpsdiscount.com/products/index.html?p=970 for $20 bucks.
