Author On C340 - is 2008 map upgrade worth it?

I have TWO of the above units both appear to have V7 maps.

I see that garmin offers V8 now. As my travel is 99.999% within the
US (east coast), is there any benefit to updating the maps? I am not
aware of the subtle differences each update offers.

Comments please?

I saw one minor difference where an error was corrected. Some POI have been
updated, but still far from perfect. I'd wait for V9. Unless you keep
getting lost.

I did the upgrade and I didn't notice any difference but I'm sure there are
some. BTW you can only update one
of your receivers with the disk unless you purchase two licenses to update
both receivers. Garmin will need
the serial numbers for both units if you go for the double install.

I only have one 660 (can't afford two), but let me ask a question of
something I don't understand. If a person does have say two GPS of the same
model, and a ver. 8 update for one of them with a key on the disk, why
couldn't it be installed on both if a person had a mind too? Is each disk
coded someway? A disk doesn't know which GPS it's being installed on.

to install the updates, Garmin needs the serial number of each unit. They
put them in a data base and when you connect
to the site the serial number activates the install for the specific serial
numbered unit. When you purchase the update
you give the serial number. If you want two then you pay for two and of
course two serial numbers.

Unless Garmin has changed the process, you pay for the upgrade at the
time you go online to get the unlock code to unlock the maps (map
details cannot be seen until you unlock it). And have to enter the
unique Unit I.D. of the GPS receiver as part of the process of getting
the unlock code.

If you later run the update on a second GPS receiver, the unlock code
from the first receiver will not unlock the maps for the second.

When you purchase the prepaid updates at retail, when you go online to
get the unlock code you enter a key code that is on a paper in the
prepaid package and you are given the unlock code without having to pay
for it.

This has been a sort of evolving process and that is how it worked for
my a year or so ago, it may have changed for some the newer models.

Thanks Jack, the reason I was wondering was, the disk they sent me has a
key code taped on the back of the CD box like other companies use on their
boxes. I couldn't understand how that one key code tied back into, or
related to my GPS. That CD must have come out of a stack of 100's, and each
one couldn't relate back to a certain GPS.

That sounds like the City Navigator North America update DVD I got. It
comes in a sleeve that has some kind of key code on the back. But you
don't have to do anything with that code as far as I remember. I just
put the DVD in the drive, it installed the new version of CNNA, and then
I went online and unlocked it using a credit card to pay the update fee.

The update mapping was not visible until I entered the unlock code and I
uninstalled the previous version from the Control Panel to recover the
disk space.

If I do that again, I'll probably shop the Internet or eBay and look for
one of the retail updates as you can save $15 or so with those.

I bought that DVD also, and since I already had a registered unlock
code, it asked for the key on the back to install. Just like a MS
product. Later I went to Garmin and look at my stored unlock keys,
and found that the key form the back of the DVD was associated with
the unlock key and Unit ID stored there.

That's exactly the way mine was. However, I got the free update they sent
out, so I didn't have to buy it. I haven't checked my registered unlock
code yet. I just put the DVD in, entered the unlock code, and it installed
with no problem. As many as they send out, I don't see how they can put a
different key code on the back of each sleeve, or plastic box as was my
case. All the maps are visible, and it shows the new version as being
installed in my 660.

I looked, and my GPS registration code, and it is not even close to the Map
Update 2008 City Navigator North America NT(they call it Product Key on the
back). It was a bright green paste-on sticker 2 1/2 x 4 inches.

The Product Key that was on the back of my sleeve was entered with the
unlock code at Garmin when I checked.

I went to Garmins web site and I cannot find that info. Where is it
located?

You have to create an account and log in. Plus you have to have told
your software to store the unlock key on Garmin's site.

Oh no, I PURCHASED and already paid for the update when I got the disk.
So, the key on the disk is what I used to install the update to my Garmin.
I did not go online to unlock it. I sure wouldn't do that and pay again!
It works fine and the maps are updated.

I just checked the Unlock information in "My Garmin" and the unlock
information for my update is there. So, when I installed using the "key"
it must have added the unlock information to the Garmin website.
