GPS III Unlock code

| Hello there!
I really do appreciate your works. Thank you all!!
I have got the problem with my old Garmin GPS III device. Could not
find device ID which can be used to unlock some maps.
The reason is that I am quite positive my old GPSIII works much better
than the new Garmin BT 10 gps receiver and am eager to put it in work.
Even contacted Garmin representatives and they did not want to help
me, the device is old, not supported anymore, bla, bla, ...
I suspect those old devices work and receive something "more" than new
devices could obtain from the sky.
But, it could be also another conspiracy theory...
So if anybody owns the same device and succeeded to obtain device ID
please help.
Regards,
LSergio

| I believe device ID's are UNIQUE numbers. So even the same models have
different ID's. Pretty much mike the MAC address of an ethernet card.
Otherwise the ID would defeat the purpose ! Several of my friends have
60CSx's and all our device ID's are different.
( but I might be wrong)
Cheers,
JCE

Unless you have a GPSIII+ your unit does NOT have downloadable maps.

| I don't need maps to download to device. I just want to use device as
a gps sensor with my old notebook due to be permanently installed in
my car.
That is the idea.
And NRoute could not read/obtain unit ID because it is too old. It
could be advantage though considering those IDs.
Thank you anyway, maybe somebody would enlight us all with a brilliant
idea?!?!?!

I have not followed all of this thread, but if you want to just take the
position information from the gps and display it on a map, there are lots of
solutions beside Garmin maps. For the US the one that comes to mind is
Street Atlas USA from DeLorme. Then there are topographic mapping programs
from a variety of manufacturers. In general, this type of software can
handle NMEA from all brands of gps receivers, and they don't care about unit
ID or anything like that.

I think the GPS III is old enough that it goes back to when Garmin GPS
receivers did not have a Unit I.D. embedded in them. So that might also
mean that maps that need to be unlocked to a specific Unit I.D. cannot
be unlocked to it.
The unlock code only controls making the uploaded maps visible on a
specific GPS receiver. If you have maps installed on a PC, entering a
valid unlock code for that product will make the maps visible on the PC.
And it will do that regardless of whether or not you own a GPS
receiver with a Unit I.D. in it or not.

If they are saying that the GPS III will not work because the GPS III
does not have an embedded Unit I.D., then that is something that
probably cannot be changed.

GPS receivers have gotten a lot better since the days of the GPS III,
but if you don't want to use a BT-10 and want to use mapping on a
laptop, then a GPS-118 cabled receiver may be an option for you. As I
understand it, if you have a MapSource install with a Garmin mapping
product and also have a Garmin GPS receiver that will provide a NMEA
input, in the Garmin proprietary protocol, to the free nRoute software,
then you would have a way to use MapSource mapping on a laptop for
navigation.

If the Unit I.D. is not there in the GPS III, then it is simply not
there. That is not something that can be added later. I don't think it
is a conspiracy.

NRoute has to get map data from somewhere and I believe that is from a
Garmin map program which will require a unit ID or unlock code.
If you live in the USA, give MS Streets & Trips a try on your laptop. You
will have to be able to change your GPS III to NEMA 2.0 output.
I've successfully used my GPS-V with S&T.
