I just picked up a nuvi 660. For some reason it announces streets
wrong.

Examples:
Redwood Dr. is announce as "Redwood Doctor"
Pine St. is announced as "Pine Saint"

ie Dr. = Doctor and St. = Saint on my nuvi 660.

Anyone else experience this?

What language to you have it set for? I've not run into those differences,
but there are differences in how certain terms are handled in US, British,
and Australian English.

It's a feature.

[yeah, my 660 does that too.]

But don't worry, Garmin will be happy to sell you an equally over-priced
replacement model where they add one more teeny little feature that you
thought you had already purchased...

In fact, I'm surprised the whole 6xx series isn't already listed with the
rest of the 'discontinued' units, just to get you primed to the idea of
cracking open your wallet to get what really should be fixed in the unit
you already own -- like the trivial addition of having it go into 'map'
mode after a minute or so -- but no, you have to buy new hardware to make
it work the way old hardware always worked [the 26xx series for example].

One of these days, perhaps people will wise up to the fact that the
throw-away priced gps are getting better and better every day.

My Nüvi did the same when the Nüve was set to dutch.
After switching to the US language, Dr became drive and not doctor.

Yes, it's a computer so it does this to me all the time, and most often
(not all the time and I don't know why not all the time) it pronounces "L
St" as "L Slut"

Very interesting. I haven't heard anything from Garmin yet so I am
guessing it is a known problem that they do not have a fix for. Seems
to be hit or miss, so I am guessing an algorithm issue. Some logic
problem with their text to speach engine.

Its not a bug and it will also depend on the voice you have selected or the
original region your GPS was intended for, since definitions will vary from
country to country. The difference between Doctor or Drive is usually in the
period at the end of the abbreviation. DR is pronounced Drive whereas DR.
(with a period) is pronounced Doctor. In the same way ST is pronounced
Street whereas ST.(with a period) is pronounced Saint. If there is a DR. in
the map which is associated with Drive then the period is probably a typo in
the map data. The abbreviations for road names should not have periods in
them but sometimes they occur. So for example - St. Marks St should announce
Saint Marks Street..
