Author need more accurate topos

I have Mapsource Topo version 4 to make and download topo maps into my
GPSMAP 76, but I have a need for a topo with much more detail for a small
area I am working in (approx 1 sq mile or less)

Where can I get more detailed topos that I can upload into my GPS? Is there
a conversion program of some sort that will generate Garmin "mps" map files
from georeferenced digital or scanned paper maps for use in Mapsource?

Thanks
Jim

If you have the digital vector data, you should be able to load it up (given
time and patience). Check out GPSMapEdit and cgpsmapper. If you have the
data as a DEM, you'll need to contour it with something first.

If you have a paper map, you'll need to scan, and vectorize it somehow
first.

All of this is doable, it just depends on how much time/effort/money you
want to invest in doing it.
