does anyone know how to make the backlight stay on and be seen when the
garmin starts up (at 100%).
i followed the directions in the manual, but it still comes up at like 5%
light, and i have to fiddle with it every time i turn it on.
i am not concerned with battery usage, but i use it in the car, and it would
be nice to actually see it.

No answer for you but I have the exact same question about the exact
same GPS unit.

This is what works on my 76Cx, I think the setting may work the same on
yours.

Turn the battery saver off, turn the back light timer off, set the
screen to full brightness. Press Menu > Menu > Setup > Display, then
Set the brightness to 100%, and the back light timeout to Stays On.

When you turn it on, make two extra taps on the power button to get to
full brightness and press Enter. It will then stay at full brightness.
Or so I seem to recall.

If you connect external power it will go to full brightness and stay
there too with the above settings. Or so I seem to remember.

Try as Jack tell, press extra times on the power button.

This will give you lights in steps of 5%, 50% and 100%

My 76Cx works with AA cells too. Look at page 37 of the User's Manual:

http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/ eTr... /> sManual.pdf

It describes how to change the settings I mention. The Backlight
Timeout setting is what I called the battery saver. If that is the same
as it is on my 76Cx, you'll still have to set it to full brightness at
startup. That is described on page 4 of the manual. With that and
changing the other settings it, will stay at that brightness and not
time out to save battery.
