I got a 60CSx for Christmas. I loaded a little TOPO on it (on the
included 128 MB card) and used it for a few weeks. Worked great.
Then , I got City Navigator and a new 2GB card. I loaded the entire
US and a little more of the TOPO (1564 MB total maps). Now, the unit
occasionally has lag times of up to 10 seconds. It happens during any
key command. Sometimes the unit will just "freeze up" and not
respond. The key buffer is still working because when it unfreezes
(5-10 seconds) it responds rapid-fire to all key presses. Is this
normal? Do I have any recourse?

I have a 60CSx set up almost exactly like yours and do not see the problem
you observe. What brand of micro SD card to you have? I use a 2GB SanDisk
as SanDisk is one of the brands recommended by Garmin. There is talk of
differences between brands of cards. From digital photo forums I have seen
discussion on different behavior in that application.

I am using a SanDisk 2GB card. This problem comes up about once every
ten times I interact with the unit. Is it possible a botched or
slightly maladjusted map file could be causing a lag? Too much detail
on the maps?

Are you possibly using USB 1.0 instead of 2.0 in your system? Or have
a USB hub that is only 1.0. This can make quite a difference in
speed. Doubt very much you problem could be software.

To clarify, the problem does not appear when the GPSR is connected to
the computer. It happens during normal course of usage (entering data
to find a waypoint, finding a POI etc.)

When I transferred the maps to the unit I used a USB cable between the
PC and the unit itself.

Nope. I have never noticed any degration of speed on my CSx. It have locked
up a couple of times, but that is it.

Disable either one of the maps and check if the Problem still exists. If
both maps are enabled, both will be drawn even though the Topo will not
be visible, but it takes time.
btw. the 60CSx supports USB 1 only.

Can you name any documentation to support that? I did a search of the
entire .pdf version of the manual and nowhere did it mention a USB
version. Seeing 2.0 has been the standard since 2001, I find it hard
to believe that the 60CSX doesn't support 2.0

Thats right, I also didn't find it. But having a look at www.garmin.de:
Geräte - Outdoor. Select the 60CSx and open "GPS-Eigenschaften". There
you'll find "weitere Schnittstellen USB 1.1" (further interfaces USB 1.1)
Another thing. I have got an old notebook with one USB 1.1 interface
only. If I connect a USB 2.0 device to it, XP tells me that this device
could work with better performance if I connect it to an USB 2.0
interface. If I connect the 60CSx to that USB-Port it doesn't.
And on the other hand uploading data from this notebook doesn't last
longer than doing it from another one with USB 2.0.
