660 wants to send me on circuitous routes
|
|
|
| My new 660 would have me exit a road unnecessarily (no traffic, no
construction) or would have me take a turn onto a road AFTER the one I
should be taking. Since I've been just testing the unit for local
trips, I'm concerned that though it might get me to my destination
eventually, it would involve time- and gasoline-consuming detours that
are not necessary. Has anybody else experienced such mis-directions
from their unit?

| In my experience, this happens because of choices you have made. If you ask
the unit for the fastest route, it will put you on the freeway whether you
like it or not; if you ask for the shortest route it tries its darndest to
describe a straight line which may or may not be what you want. If you tell
it to ignore certain types of road it will carry out your wishes by putting
you on roads you don't want to go on. In many ways the unit is ingenious,
but in others it is a dumb animal, doing only what it is asked to do without
conscious thought.

Thanks for your input, Bob, but I have it set for "faster time" and to
avoid just traffic, U-turns and unpaved roads, so there is no reason
whatsoever for it to want to take me off the highway, especially if
there's no traffic and no construction.

My 2720 considers any turn sharper than 90 degrees to be a U-turn. It has
taken me on some bizarre routes because of this. I don't know how my 750
defines a U-turn; I turned off U-turn avoidance the day I got it. This
shouldn't be an issue on the highway though. I've never signed up for the
traffic service, so I don't know how accurate they are. It's easy to
determine traffic on the local roads around here. If it's between 5:00 AM
and 11:00 PM, then there's traffic.
