| Just wondered if anyone here uses the Garmin Topo U.S. maps. Do the contour
lines appear on your GPS screen? How good is the detail and magnification
level compared to the National Geographic Topo series? Is there anyway I can
upload the actual map image contours from the National Geographic Topo
series to my legend Hc?
I appreciate any information you may have.

Sure, lots of users. It is pretty much like looking at a 1:100,000 topo
map. But not like looking at a 1:24,000 map, there is more detail on
those.
I find the U.S. Topo package fine for most ordinary purposes. If I'm
going to an area where I want to have more detail I would normally have
a 1:24K paper map and a compass with my anyway.
Sometimes having a good handheld like my 76Cx on 1:100K mapping and a
paper map in my backpack is the perfect thing. The 76Cx will help to
resolve you position on the 1:24K paper map real quickly in heavy woods
where there is not much line of sight to spot features to do that with.
Then you can use the 1:24K paper map to get the details.
U.S. Topo was recently discontinued:
http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/topo.jsp
the current version is Topo U.S. 2008:
http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/topous.jsp
You can go to those links and use the online map viewers to see the
actual detail you would get with those.
There is also a 24K product called U.S. Topo 24K National Parks. It
comes in three versions East, Central, and West and provided 1:24K
detail in selected National Parks.
http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/...po24knpeast.jsp
That would give you 24K coverage only in some areas, and would basically
cost three times as much for full national coverage. I'm not certain
but I think the 24K product has 1:100K detail in the areas that are not
in 1:24K detail.

| Thanks Jack. I'm not sure I was clear. I was asking if it was possible to
import the map detail (contour lines and detail) from the National
Geographic Topo program or just routes and waypoints. I'm not referring to
the Garmin topo.

On a Garmin GPS unit such as the 60CSx or the 76CSx, it is NOT possible
to import the map detail from the National Geographic Topo program. I
know what you are thinking, because it is 24k and the garmin topo is
only 100k, but unfortunately it won't work.

I sent Garmin an email asking if they were going to come out
of the stone age and supply better than 1:100000 topos. I
heard nothing back. :-(

What a surprise you got no reply to that -- NOT!

| Thanks. That would be my question. I just talked with Garmin and they said
that on the national park series, outside the parks there is no detail at
all. I want to be able to have the map image detail (contour lines, rivers,
etc.) showing on my GPS screen. So, I guess the Garmin US topo is what I
need.

| Users of Garmin receivers are slowly adding more detailed mapping...
Try http://miscjunk.org/ for "1:24,000 scale" maps of
Colo., Wyoming, Utah (coming soon). Some other Western
US state is coming in a few months.

Well, my phraseology was much more politically correct than
that... ;-)
