Author Newbie nuvi questions

Greetings,

I'm thinking of getting a Garmin Nuvi (maybe a 350) for all the standard
reasons--highway travel, finding restaurants, etc. in the US, but also am
interested in using it on some less-traveled roads. Can you help with the
following? Users that have actual experience in Northern Arizona driving
unpaved roads in the Forests and the Rez are especially welcome to respond.

-I think this is true but would like confirmation. Are Forest Service Roads
included in the map database that comes with the nuvis? I believe they are
when the nuvi is set to "most map detail" but wonder how inclusive they are.
How likely is a National Forest road that appears on a FS map to be
available to nuvi folks?

-Ditto for the unpaved roads on the Navajo and Hopi reservations.

-It appears that I can add additional maps to what comes with the USA nuvi
devices. What do I need to include these...a SD card, extra map software,
etc? This is especially important to me if the standard nuvi doesn't come
with FS or Rez unpaved roads out-of-the-box. Are maps other than street maps
useable?...something like a topo? Which maps compatible with a nuvi would I
look for? If I have additional map databases, how do I switch from the
built-in nuvi US roads data to the other maps I have available?

Thanks.

Any other advice you have for a Vehicle-GPS Newbie is also appreciated. I do
have an ancient Garmin GPS II Plus (no-map) GPS unit from over a decade ago,
but the new GPS units are all new to me, bells- and whistles-wise.

See for yourself using the on-line map viewer on Garmin's web site.

Yes, you can load topo maps into Nuvi. They don't support auto-routing and
aren't as detailed as paper topo maps - except for national parks covered by
the 24K topos.

You will probably find that the Nuvi lacks some of the off-road features
your GPS II has though having maps (any maps) is a big upgrade.

I've got a map that I put together myself based on downloads from the
Forest Service site. Interested? It covers all of AZ and is about
13MB.

Dan,

The link you offer at the bottom of this message has "reached its download
capacity" and can't be used anymore. Is there another way convenient to you
where you could post the map for downloading? Thanks.
