Dont worry, Bill.
It's just a temporary file produced during the normal use of the
program. If you had a problem, it would have some debug info in it to
help diagnose the problem. You can ignore it (delete it).

O.K. , thanks!!!
I was thinking it was the old Firmware.
Is it not strange that there was no backup from the old firmware?

Bill

Hi Bill,
It has never been possible to get the firmware out of a SporTrak.
I recently wanted to try V5.34 (the latest, downloaded from the
website) to replace the V4.06 which was in it when bought. But I
wanted the option of reverting to V4.06 in case the new bugs were
worse than the old ones. I emailed Magellan and they sent me a copy
of V4.06 so I could swap back and forth to properly compare them.
Regards, Eddy [UK]

Hallo Eddy,
And what is your experience about the V5.34 version?
I think it is not better than the V4.10 that was on my SporTrak, it
seems that the compas sometimes dosn't properly work and there is olso
stil a bug in the --> mapdata.--> user--> 2 times delta X insted of
delta X and Y, that I use for the dutch grid.
I will mail Magellan for the old version!!!!
Greatings,
Bill

Loss of Tide function in Magellan SporTrak Color
(part of Navas' Sailing & Racing in the San Francisco Bay Area)
Last updated: August 26, 2004
Warning (as of this writing): Upgrade of the firmware in the Magellan
SporTrak Color handheld GPS to Version 5 (currently 5.34) removes the tide
functionality documented in the User Manual Addendum, an obvious disadvantage
for marine use. [MORE]

| Hi Bill,
My SporTrak Pro (EU) came with V4.06 firmware and I wanted to try out
V5.34 (the latest - downloaded from their website) so I asked
Magellan to send me a copy of V4.06 (which had been on their website
but the link is now broken) so I could swap back and forth between
them to properly compare them. I swapped back and forth a lot.
I've decided to stick with V5.34 for the longer routes, slightly
better accuracy and new "Total Dist" variable. I don't use Alarms or
Direct Route. The other faults are not deal-breakers for me, but
*** I WOULD LIKE ALL THE FAULTS FIXING PLEASE MAGELLAN! ***
Please note that Robert Lipe maintains a Magellan GPS FAQ at:
http://www.mtgc.org/robertlipe/myfaq/Magellan_FAQ.shtml
John Navas has reported that 5.34 removes the tide functionality.
I've not seen a compass error but I don't use that screen much.
I would be very interested in any further comments from others who
have compared these firmware versions.
All the best, Eddy [UK]
---=3D=3D=3D---
My personal detailed observations of their differences follow: ...
V5.34 New Features / Benefits:
1/ Routes are now 48 legs vs 29 legs (i.e. 49 WPTs vs 30) =3D 65% more.
=3D=3D (Mapsend Streets Europe can't use the extra new ones, but
"GPS Utility" and "TrackLogs" can.)
2/ New variable - "Total Dist" (remainder of Route).
=3D=3D (Can be custom added to most screens.)
3/ New "Vis" tick box for each individual User Waypoint.
(Always set to On with upload -
can only edit them Off/On one at a time, or globally Off/On.)
(Cannot access them through the PC serial link.)
4/ New Alarm - Proximity - displays only the Message field ...
(Weird, 2-stage alarm, designed for use with "Direct Route" maps)
(Distances to Waypoint are unpredictable, e.g. varies with speed)
(Cancel beep also does button function e.g. ESC changes screen)
(Message displays only for a very few seconds.)
(When a Route completes, the Alarm is automatically de-activated)
(Bug - turns backlight on - see below "V5.34 New Faults:".)
Also:
Possibly more sensitive to satellite signals.
Possibly slightly more accurate.
Possibly faster warm satellite fix.
Required for street routing with "Direct Route Europe" maps.
(I don't have "Direct Route Europe".)
Previous V4.06 weaknesses improved in V5.34:
1/ Noticeably typically less drift during several hours use.
i.e. closer return to start point of walk.
2/ Less "splatter" of spurious trackpoints when exiting "no signal"
areas e.g. buildings, tunnels, etc.
3/ Up to two SBAS satellites are found following a Hard Reset.
In England:
V4.06 - typically finds one WASS and one ESTB satellite.
After this, only these two are used until the next Hard Reset.
V5.34 - typically finds one WASS and one ESTB satellite at
first, then switches to the correct two ESTB (EGNOS test)
satellites (2 were in use in Apr 2005).
(Later update: only one PRN currently is in use at Sep 2005.)
4/ Slightly better NiMH battery level indication.
5/ Clock seems to show the time with less lag (e.g. 1.0s vs 1.5s).
V5.34 Changes:
1/ User detailed maps appear at the top of the database list.
2/ User Waypoint - Nearest to - list of options now an extra window.
3/ Some commands need more button presses.
E.g. Build route from User Waypoints - 5 more presses per entry if
selecting from "Nearest to" Position & 4 map regions uploaded
4/ More recent Almanac.
5/ Different method of terminating "Lawyer Screen" etc. text strings.
(This only affects hex firmware adjustments.)
Previous V4.06 Faults not fixed in V5.34:
Occasional loss of sat. time sync: only curable with a Hard Reset.
NOT FIXED
Tracks saved at 0.01km cannot be re-loaded back as unit up-load
rejects trackpoints closer than about 12m apart.
NOT FIXED
Road screen Waypoint or road image OFFSET
with a long leg (e.g. 50 miles) in the middle of a Route.
NOT FIXED
Primary: GRB36 OSGB
Temporary Goto cursor position -
Goes to OFFSET position
NOT FIXED
Primary: WGS84 Lat/Lon Secondary: GRB36 OSGB
Position screen - Projection - From - User Waypoint -
Secondary position shown OFFSET
NOT FIXED
Primary: GRB36 OSGB Secondary: WGS84 Lat/Lon
Map screen - Select Item - User Waypoint -
Position shown OFFSET (but Edit screen shows correct position)
NOT FIXED
V5.34 New Faults:
1/ LOSES TRACK after "Street Goto" if "Direct Route EU" map active.
=3D=3D (Others have reported this - I don't have "Direct Route Europe"
so it's therefore not a problem to me.)
2/ Sometimes LOSES ALL COMMENTS/MESSAGES for all Waypoints. This
=3D=3D only happens following an upload so I now check after each upload
and re-upload if the messages have disappeared (a "PITA").
(5 times so far in 5 months.)
3/ Backlight comes on high with every Alarm - DRAINS BATTERY
=3D=3D and makes annoying whining noise & shortens the backlight life.
(I very rarely use Alarms so it's therefore not a problem to me.)
4/ Database - User Waypoint - in either sort method, only the 1st 16
=3D=3D names are shown properly. The remainder show only the first 7
characters of their name. They all show OK in the Edit screen.
5/ With Map Setup | Pos-Dest Line displayed, the position end of the
line now lags behind the Position Arrow by an amount proportional
to speed e.g at 70mph it is about 20m wrong. It is fine in V4.06.
(This corresponds to a delay of about 0.6s, obviously not
noticeable when walking.)
(Update: I think they've actually improved the placing of the
Position Arrow and left the Pos-Dest Line display as it was.)
6/ A part of a road is not displayed at 160m scale and above, but is
displayed properly at 80m or 35m scale. It displays fine at every
scale in V4.06 and in Mapsend Streets Europe on the PC.
(N52=B057.731' W1=B036.084' to N52=B057.699' W1=B036.044' near Derby,
UK)
Another one noticed not displayed at only 350m scale:
(N52=B047.150' W1=B029.480' to N52=B047.059' W1=B029.305' near Smisby,
UK)
Another one noticed not displayed at only 350m scale:
(N52=B052.335' W1=B026.638' to N52=B052.269' W1=B026.413' near Derby,
UK)
7/ Map screen - Select Item - User Waypoint - displays Message, then
enter Edit mode, then press ESC - GARBAGE ON SCREEN after message

Hallo Eddy,
This is a great review, thanks!!!
Magellan send me a file with firmware v 4.10 by E-mail, so now I
can also switch firmware versions.
I will play around with both versions!!!!
