Downloading maps to GPS unit?

| Hi,
I have a sportrak pro that I connect to my pocket PC running Memory Map
software so that it can diosplay real time moving maps showing my position
on an Ordnamce Survey map of the UK. This is a bit inconvenient in the
mountains (not to mention expensive if I drop it!).
Are there any hand held GPS units that will show OS maps on their display -
even if you have to download them?
I'd also like to get maps of the french alps into it if they exist.

| I'm not familiar with OS maps, but if they are raster maps (scanned
images), the short answer is no. See this for more...

The only GPS units you can put raster imagery on are either (a) PDA's,
which are very fragile or (b) expensive professional model ruggedized
units. If these are raster maps, you could get a PDA with integrated or
CF GPS, and put it in a protective case.HTH
