I installed the MapSend Direct route on my Thinkpad T40. Everything seemed
to install OK, but when I try to launch the MapSend App, nothing happens. I
have the CD loaded, but still the app won't launch.

Any ideas?

I would try reinstalling, if you elect to do a full install you do not
need to have the CD in to run the program, it will copy the data to the
hard drive.

The same thing happened to me with my Toshiba M45. Tried both typical
and full install. Neither would execute after install. Next I
installed it on my Dell tower pc and it worked.

I unloaded some background apps and then MapSend installed OK.

Assuming you recall, can you share *which* background apps
you unloaded that allowed DR to run? DR Europe runs fine on my Dell
tower, but won't launch on my Toshiba M45. Oddly enough, the older
Mapsend Streets Europe works on both.

Hmmm....I did not do a whole lot of experimenting, I just unloaded the
following: McAfee Virus, Palm Sync, MS Messanger, Webshots, Object Dock,
Google Desktop

Crap! :^) None of those are apps that I run on my laptop.
Oh, well...I guess it's trial and error time, then. Thanks for the
info!

What OS is it? Try right clicking on the task bar and bringing up the
Task Manager.

Then look at the Processes tab, sort them by Mem Usage, try to start
MapSend and see which one(s) the memory usage jumps up on. That might
identify the problem.

Another way is to track down the processes that show active, identify
the apps the belong to, and start shutting those down.

I never cease to be amazed at how many applications install or configure
themselves as TSR's that are started with the system and without telling
anyone that is happening or, in some cases, even giving you the option
to not have them running in the background.

I routinely find a half a dozen icons in the tray on some systems and
the system owners are clueless as to what they are and what they do.

The one that jumps off the page at me is the Sync. These often monitor
serial ports, preventing communications with a serial GPS.

I don't think it is WHAT I had running in the background, but the fact that
I had enough running to reduce the amount of memory available.

I had this same problem with Mapsend World and Mapsend North America on a Dell D810 laptop, but Mapsend Topo 3d worked fine. It has nothing to do with memory, I have a gig of ram and had over 600 Megs available. I stopped all the programs I was sure were non-system, and they both work. I'll have to go through one by one to see which it was.

Tuned out to be InoRT.exe, which is part of the ETrust antivirus software on my computer. First thing to check is probably antivirus software.
