purposes of Magellan Product Families

| Magellan's site lists all these different product lines (Meridian,
SporTrak, Explorist, etc.), but they don't seem to give any reasons for
having several product lines. I show up at their site without much of a
clue as to which product line to prefer.
Okay, their website/marketing people may be bozos while their products
may be good.
Is one product line intended for marine use, one for forest use, one for
road use, or what?

More just the result of product evolution. The Meridian series came
first and works well but is somewhat large compared to competing
models. So then Magellan came out with the SporTraks which are very
similar but somewhat smaller in exchange for dropping the memory
expansion slot and a slightly smaller screen.
The eXplorists are the newest models. The 100/200/300 models lack any
PC interface, but the other models use USB instead of the RS-232 ports
of the Meridian/SporTraks.
Functionally in terms of reception and accuracy all of these models are
very similar but they vary in features. So your choice depends on how
many maps you may need to have loaded simultaneously, whether you
consider a color screen to be necessary, and whether you want an
integrated magnetic compass and pressure sensor.
