Any means to detect Off Magellan Roadmate?
|

| This seemed to be a silly question the first time I decided against posting
it.
But, since the Roadmates are expensive units, I will ask it anyway.
If I left it in the car, off - is there any way / equipment that a
potential thief could use to detect it. Knowing this would save both my GPS
& my car. I have been lugging it to & from whenever I use it.
Also, any recommendations for a good in-trunk safe - safety & price-wise?
Thanks for the info.

| Yes - they could look through the window and see it. .

| If it is truly OFF, and you don't have some dead giveaway, e.g. externally
visible antenna, suction cup gizmo left on window, or even the imprint of a
suction cup on the window, then "no".
If you had a trunk-safe, someone could see you take it out of the car and
put it in the trunk. Or, they could see it in the car while you're driving,
follow you, and then steal it when you leave the car. Just because you're
paranoid doesn't mean 'they' still aren't out to get you!
If your particular model is never really completely off, for example the
clock oscillator is still running to maintain time and date (powered by who
knows what), then it is possible to detect the receiver. Exactly how to do
that requires a fair amount of sophistication, and is really far too much
stuff to put in this already too long note. Also, it assumes that the noise
that car electronics make don't mask the giveaway signal. I know my cars
always have some electronics running even when the key is in the off
position, e.g. the clock (notice how this clock topic keeps cropping up).

| Don't know about the Roadmate, but with my GPS I push a button to release it
from the mount and then just tuck it away under the driver's seat. Out of
site - no problems.

I leave my GPS unit in the car in clear site at all times. The inconvenience
and hassle of taking it along far outweigh the possibility that someone will
steal it, or steal the car. In addition, it is more likely that I will drop
it and break it if I carry it everywhere. Plus, I would look silly. I don't
like looking silly.

| I'm a little surprised that this thread is still available.
Anyway, here's my take on the response from the guy who seemed to know about
internal power & so on. Consider the origin of the technology, and it's
exclusivity, to date (the Europeans just started their own). If it were I, I
might be tempted to twist some arms.
My point was, crooks (sophisticated ones with economies of scale) could use
the same means to locate a GPS.
