If you're talking commercial airliners, some people have reported
good luck so long as they held the receiver (or antenna) up to a
window. Even then, you might run into situations where not enough
satellites were "visible" to get a good fix.

I once tried it with my DeLorme program and GPS receiver. Held the
receiver to the window and it got a good fix. Not only showed me where
I was on the ground map, but also got the altitude as 33,000 feet.

Interesting. Last time I flew commercial (USA), navigation devices
were specifically mentioned as "off limits" during the flight.
The couple of responses to your question indicate that this does not
seem uniformly enforced.

1. Sit by the window. You get the best results in the window, but near
by will work too (down on the windowside armrest I was getting 5
satellites at about 10-33% and 7 at 100% when in the window).
2. Delta did not care if I used it and one of the staff looked at what
we were doing. On the other hand, American Airlines' magazine and
website say no, but the cabin staff (in steerage) did not say anything
on my last flight, but then I was not blatant about it. Check the
Airline you are interested in for legal and banned items. Side note:
someone posted last year or maybe earlier that one airline banned them
after some idiot with more money than brains raised a stink about the
pilot not flying a straight course to the destination and lost him some
time because of that (no proof, but knowing some suits, that could be
true on both sides).

Thank you all for your answers. I think I'll ask the crew before use.

I specifically asked last time I flew, and they said no problem. My
Sportrak Color hooked to MS 2006 worked flawlessly.

| Look on the websites of airlines, they usually will have something in there
about GPS use. I know Alaska Airlines won't allow the use of GPS the last
time I looked.
It would be kind of cool though.

| I recently had an interesting experience on a couple of flights. We were
flying from Harrisburg, PA to Savannah, GA, which involves changing planes
in Charlotte, NC. It was nominally on USAir, but all of the planes were
operated by USAir commuter lines. I received a GPS for Christmas, and
thought it would be interesting to try it on a plane. According to the
USAir website, GPS units are OK except during take-off & landing.
Nevertheless, I followed the protocol of asking the cabin attendant if it
was OK, not wanting to be arrested or shot by a nervous air marshall.
Between Harrisburg and Charlotte, the flights were on Canadair jets that
held about 50 people, and operated by PSA. Both cabin attendants said no
GPS. Between Charlotte and Savannah, the planes were Canadair jets that sat
about 98, operated by Mesa. On the way out, I asked and they said no
problem. My Explorist worked fine as long as I held it to the window. I
didn't bother to try on the way back, because I had already confirmed that
it would work. I asked the attendant on the second PSA flight whether it
had to do with the particular airplane, and he responded that it was just
the rule. I didn't follow up on it, but it definitely was not USAir's rule.
