Roadmate 700 update.
|
|
| LabRat 2006-02-27, 11:48 pm |
| The v5 update for the Roadmate 700 is now listed on the Magellan website
under "Software Updates". The price is $99 for the US update or $299 if you
want access to the European maps. I'll just have to wait and see how long
it takes to get here.

| I preordered mine two weeks ago and mine shipped today. I called
magellan to get a tracking number and it will be here by the end of the
week. Also anyone placing their orders today and after will have to
wait 2 weeks before they ship because they are shipping all pre orders
first. This came direct from a magellan rep about 4:00 MST

I would like to see them change the web checkout process. They ask you
to select the shipment method ($$$) before you know that they are
not-in-stock/backordered.
Word to the wise, no sense upgrading your shipping.

| I ordered from the website on Monday, selected ground shipping, and the
upgrade arrived Wednesday. The upgrade came with the documentation and POI
manager for the Roadmate 760. Upgrade time was about 3 hours, but as has
been said in this group before...be sure to hook the USB cable up to the
back of the computer, not to a port connected to a header. Not sure why, it
just didn't work.

| What a company! Order the upgrade immediately after it is announced as
available and get this status:
"BackOrdered
AvailabilityUnknown"
I would think it would be pretty easy to generate a ton of CDs before
announcing it. With
all the calls they got requesting the upgrade, they must have known there
was going to
be a high demand.
Why not make it available as a download?
Dealing with this company has been so frustrating that I'm sure this will be
the last
product I buy from them.

| Even before the update, I never encountered a street that wasn't on the map.
Not surprising since I live in Chicago and the streets haven't changed much
in decades (at least in the places I have driven) I originally purchased
the unit for use on business trips so I could visit places other than the
hotel bar! Anyway, I tried it out on the way to work this morning, and am
pleased with the upgrade. It seems to calculate routes a little quicker,
there are a lot more points of interest (another thing that will probably be
of use on the road, but not so much in my hometown) and the "saywhere" thing
announcing the street names for upcoming turns is kind of cool. I haven't
tried most of the other new features, but hope to soon!

| Perhaps a bit of good news for you Jim.
I ordered the upgrade at about noon Wed (3/1) and, although I also got a
Backordered status, my upgrade shipped today (3/4).
Hopefully yours will follow shortly.

Have you heard any reports on how well the updates are working out?

| Haven't heard anything about V5 except Lab Rat's post in this thread (a
positive endorsement).
From my experience with last year's V4 upgrade (after they *finally*
released the $(#@ thing!) I'm pretty sure you'll be quite pleased.
I wonder how my order slipped in front of yours. Perhaps it's because I paid
$5 extra for 3-day shipping.

This has also been my experience. I ordered 01-MAR and it is still
"PENDING".
At least they haven't run it through my credit card. That would have
triggered a response.
It could be worse, I suppose. What if they required us to send the
units to them?
This scenario is typical of a company that has allot of operational
problems: low morale among staff, poor process (quality) management,
understaffed, no executive exposure to customer service.

| Don't abandon hope Jim - they may have updated your area. If they did,
please let the group know.
Navtech (map supplier for Magellan, Lexus and many, many other clients) has
to actually drive and continually redrive the roads they map. They use
specially-equipped cars with expensive instrumentation. It looks like they
can't cycle through all the roads in areas they cover in a year's time.
Maybe they covered your area for the V5 upgrade.
Also, I didn't mean to imply that V5 isn't a great update. The problems I
mentioned are minor and easily corrected or even, like the Previous Cities
list, self-correcting. SayWhere works great and is a great safety feature
because it helps keep your eyes off the navigation screen and on the road.
Multi-destination routing is also a great enhancement. Also, it looks like
they may have added department stores (like Sears) and probably many other
*categories* of POIs. The search for POIs is also *much* improved: you can
enter the Name without having to first figure out the category. You can also
limit the POI search to a specified city. These are *major* improvements.
In my other post I focused on problems and what I did about them. The intent
was to help others who might encounter the same problems. I haven't gotten
into the neat new features yet but I suspect they will be in pretty good
shape. All the features in the V4 upgrade worked properly and only one
(Route Simulation) was a complete disappointment to me.
Enjoy and post back any positive and negative things you find.

Maybe not!
I ordered online at about noon on March 1 with 3-day shipping. It shipped
late in the evening on March 3 and I received it by noon on March 8.
I have to admit I was tempted to downgrade my shipping when I saw my order
status was Backordered but I'm glad I was too lazy to do so.

My order stayed in "PRCESSING" status for about thirty-six hours. I
received an email this morning (16-MAR) that it had "SHIPPED".
I think Sarbanes-Oxley requires that most large companies not realize
income until they ship. These production, operational, and supply
chain delays must be costing them money through inefficiency.

Received 20-MAR, after ordering 01-MAR. On the bright side, I followed
the installation guide to a "t", and it went without a hitch.
I have installed, but still not played around with the POI editor that
came with it; three hours was enough for one night. : )

| Just ordered mine via phone. Was told 2 weeks before ship.
They also sent a copy of the invoice via email. Invoice has the Unlock
code.
I'm assuming the DVD's are not locked, it's really the unit that is. So
anyone know how much of the DVD is really data? it DVD's can handle up to 4
GB. CD's handle up to 700 MB. So the upgrade is somewhere in between.
If it was posted somewhere on the web those with a value unlock code could
grab it and install while waiting for the media to ship.
Anyone able to do that?
Or does anyone have a more current feel for time for delivery? I was
promised two weeks BO
Thanks

Correct. Your unlock code is keyed to the serial number of your unit.

V5 Update DVD: 3.62 GB (North American maps only)
User Manual CD: 7.58 MB (2 PDF files: English & French)
POI Manager CD: 3.57 MB

I suggested last year that Magellan post the V4 upgrade (about 2 GB) on
their site. Their response was that they didn't have the server capacity.
I suppose someone could post the upgrade to a newsgroup but that would be a
copyright violation.
Borrowing a V5 DVD would be more practical.

They seem to be filling backorders on schedule. Based on recent posts in
this NG, I'd expect it at your door in about 3 weeks. But with Magellan
there are no guarantees.

I'm taking off in mid April for a drive from Michigan to Florida. Wanted to
be able to use the new version.
Hopefully it will be here before I take off. It was promised in two weeks
(which I hear is the standard promise) with three day ship.
If not I'm traveling with the previous version unless I can figure out
somewhere to down load it. Alot of data, but I can burn a DVD if need be.
Understand the copyright statement, but since it's keyed I don't see how
anyone could infringe

You're living dangerously installing a major upgrade before a big trip! [See
the post "Magellan Version 5 Update Transforms RoadMate 700 To A
Paperweight".]
Make sure you follow the installation instructions exactly and don't *under
any circumstances* kill the installation, even if it appears hung, during
the first 10 or 20 minutes. There were a couple of fairly long pauses even
on my blazingly fast system. If you interrupt it while it's messing with the
firmware all is lost. Once it gets to updating the maps it can be safely
restarted if it stalls.
> Hopefully it will be here before I take off. It was promised in two weeks
> (which I hear is the standard promise) with three day ship.
Mine was backordered when I ordered online on March 1 with 3-day shipping. I
got it on March 8. The longest wait I've seen posted in this NG was 19 days
(shipping method not specified). Keep your fingers crossed.
> If not I'm traveling with the previous version unless I can figure out
> somewhere to down load it. Alot of data, but I can burn a DVD if need be.
You wouldn't need a DVD. You can just install from your computer onto the RM
700's hard drive.
> Understand the copyright statement, but since it's keyed I don't see how
> anyone could infringe
If the update data were readily available someone might hack the key
generation process. A large enough number of heavily discounted 700s were
dumped on the market to make this economically attractive. Anyone who
uploaded the data might eventually face a large financial liability.

Which may mean that the DVD is encoded for the specific unit to

Nope. It means the upgrade code reads the serial number from the unit
itself.
> Anyone else remember seeing their serial number displayed during

I don't remember for V5. But I distinctly remember it from V4 because the
serial number that the upgrade code printed didn't exactly match what was
printed on my unit. One had an extra letter or digit at the end.

You don't really believe that they have to cut a special DVD for each order
as it comes in, do you? That would be horribly slow, expensive and
inefficient. (Although it might explain the loooooong delay for the release
:-)
Besides, if each DVD were encoded for a specific unit Magellan wouldn't need
to require an unlock code since each DVD would be useless except for the
unit for which it was purchased.
Here's how it probably works:
The upgrade software gets the serial number from the unit itself; it's
probably stored in the firmware. [I think for USB devices it's stored in a
standard manner which even Windows can read.] The installation program then
mathematically manipulates the serial number using a secret formula and the
result is an unlock code that is valid only for your unit and for the V5
release.
If the unlock code that you enter doesn't match the one computed by the
installation software, installation stops. You can't compute the unlock code
because you don't know the secret formula. You have to buy it from Magellan.
But once you have the unlock code for your unit you should be able to use
*any* V5 Release DVD.
All the best to you too Ralph,
Jerry

| Anyone recently receive there Version 5 update? Trying to understand what
the current backlog period is as of mid March 2006.
IE how many days out where you promised it would ship when you ordered, and
how many days later did it actually ship?
When they say '2 weeks' are they being optimistic or pessimistic?
thanks

I ordered my upgrade v5 on March 5th. I kept checking "my orders" on
Magellan's website and saw "Pending" each day but on March 23rd I got
an email from Magellan stating that they had sent the upgrade by UPS
Express. I had the package delivered to my house in Edmonton, Alberta
the next afternoon - March 24th. Had to wait awhile for them to send
it but once sent, the delivery was extremely quick, and that was up
here in Canada. .../gord
