Street routing with Meridian Gold
|

| Can anyone tell me if its possible to have street routing on the map screen
with the Meridian Gold... I can get the turns on a different nav. screen but
I would have liked to have this feature on the map screen. I am using
"MapSend Streets & Destinations Canada" 2001
Also in trying a workaround to the above issue, I create a "go to" line to
my destination (as the crow flies) but the line does not keep current from
my moving position as I turn on different roads... my as the crow flies line
quickly disappears as I try to find roads to fit to my destination.
Is there a setting that I am missing to allow the destination line to be
recalculated by the unit as I am driving... always giving me the line in
view.
Thanks, New GPS'er

You have to have the newer DirectRoute versions to get the autorouting.
You will get it when (and only when) you have a DR detail map loaded.
When that enabled, you'll see the road route and highlighted vectors
only when you are zoomed to a level that shows all street level detail
(about .18 miles or so on the zoom display on my Meridian Color). When
you are zoomed out further there is less detail and the route is shown
as straight line vectors by leg.

I think what you are describing is that the "goto line" on a
non-autorouting map is displayed as a straight line from your position
to the destination regardless of how the road you are on is drawn on the
map.
I think the technical reason for this is that the basemap roads are not
active vectors, they are simply lines drawn on a raster image. when you
load a DirectRoute vector map as detail map the roads are vectors and
can be highlighted as individual lines.

Not until you have the DR detail map. In that case, if you stay on the
calculated route you position cursor will be on the route. If you get
off of it, you can press the Goto button two times and it will
recalculate the route from your present location.
The Magellan menus seemed like a confusing labyrinth to me when I first
started using the Magellans some years ago. Now they have been learned
and seemed easy enough to use. The now somewhat outdated but still
helpful flow chart at this link helped me get a grasp on the menu system:

And the Magellan related FAQ here have a lot of useful info:

And, of course, almost any answer you have can be found here somewhere:
