A local store is advertising, "Magellan Sportrak Color GPS, High
Resolution Color Display, Electronic Compass and Barometer, 32 MB Built-
in Memory, 2000 Track Points, Regular price $499.99, Sale price $249.99"
No model number or other details.
Is this a good piece of equipment, and, if so, is it a good price?
Thanks.

I am under the impression that the SporTrak was being discontinued. In fact
the Thales/Magellan website doesn't even show them on the products page.
That's a sure sign. So I guess its a going-out-of-business sale price!

I own a SporTrak Pro (not color) which was a very usable GPS. There are
some better performers, but it does fine and has WAAS enabled corrections.

Mine is for auction on e-bay - I'm sure for a lot less than $249. US
shipment only.

Run, don't walk, away from that deal. That is a recently discontinued
product and was a good enough piece of equipment in its day. The big
draw back to the SporTrak line was that it did not use SD cards for
unlimited expansion memory. It has a 10mb basemap and 22mb for
expansion memory for storing detailed mapping. Detail mapping would be
purchased as an optional accessory of course. Some details here:

For that kind of money I'd look for a Magellan Meridian Color which is a
much better unit that uses SD cards for expansion memory. Check eBay
and Internet sellers for the best prices.

And for another $100 or so you can get a much better handheld GPS from
Garmin. I'm a longtime user of Magellans but I'd highly recommend a
Garmin 60Cx. Magellan has lost the GPS war to Garmin on a combination
of hardware and software features. And lost a lot of loyal users
through poor support and a general lack of product development.

The 60Cx has a much better SiRF III chipset for improved speed and
sensitivity, uses microSD cards for expansion memory, and will provide
autorouting with the included base map. Again, you'd have to add a
optional mapping package to have street level detail for North America.

<snip>

I've found that you can still get a link to the product page for some of
the discontinued products if you do a google search for the name pretty
specifically. A search for "magellan sportrak color" brings up this:

That's interesting - ithat page is disconnected from the "products" menu on
the website. Perhaps its a page they forgot to remove after breaking the
links to the products page? I'm assuming the SporTrak series has been
discontinued when I say that, of course.

I suppose it is good business or a courtesy to buyers to leave the page
there. You can get back to the other active web pages from the inactive
page. It may be there there are some other links to the page from
within the active pages too.

There are a couple of places on the Magellan pages where they mention
discontinued products, like the manuals pages, but I don't think there
is a page that clearly says what products are discontinued. I just
infer that things are discontinued when they are not on the products
pages any more.

They do the same thing with software. The MapSend BlueNav CD-ROMs
simply disappeared earlier this year when the BlueNav XL SD card
appeared. It was like they had never existed.

Thanks for the words of wisdom.

I would go over to the store find just what model is being sold and then
check prices on the Net. If it is the the SporTrack Color it's a pretty
good price. The SporTrack Color has been around since 2003 so I bet a
new model has been released.

I have one. Bought it at Costco two years ago. $199. It's fine, but I
wouldn't pay anywhere near that for it.
