Hi
Magellan eXplorist 600 and local Topo-map (Finland, area 3) in SD-card.

When moving whit cursor or zooming in/out screen generates itself
app.10sec, I think thats too slow.

I tried to update firmware and that worked out when I removed basemap
from basememory to my computer - only problem was that I didn't managed
to get it back! Windows error message was something like "nnnn ms-dos
error" which points that basememory is FAT system which has limitation
of max 4GB file size (basemap 5+MB). Somehow I did managed copy it to
SD-card - were was enough space for it.

Question: is eXplorist so slow whit screenupdate or is this some kind
of error which can be fixed out whit firmware ect?

Question2: how I can reload my basemap to basememory?

Anybody?

Is this sceen update typical for GPS handhelds? I mean, that it takes
10+ seconds to generate screen. And you must just wait because you
can't do anything during that time: zoom again (up/down), change mode
(from map to compass ect).

I tested that doing multiple zooms: firs zoom in, then zoom out and
then zoom out again. It takes more than 30 sec's before my GPS was able
to zoom again.

Sounds very long. However, I have noted that the more detail I have in my
detail map, the longer everything takes. I have therefore made several
detail maps to cover parts of NY state and each contains a lot of detail for
each small area. I have to load the appropriate detail map from the SD card
for the current area if I move from one to another.

In addition, you can set the level of detail for thescreen. Set it to
"lowest" and see if it doesn't improve.

My Explorist 600 is slow to display the map screen on startup (before it
gets a 4 satellite fix), but updates with good fix data are a second.

Might need a software update? See the Magellan website for the current
version #.

Software update has installed. No difference whit this problem. Also
there is no big difference adjusting level detail.

It seems that amount of map data slower sceeen generate? So whit detail
maps whit lot of detail (=large amount of data) this GPS unit is slow.

Whit basemap (Roadmap of Finland, just mainroads, no streets ect) there
is this kind of slowing. Whit this Topo-map (Area 3, Finland) there is
this problem. Ok. This Topo-map is in SD-card and I think that its
quite hard to split it to several detail maps?

I have a Magellan Explorist 500, which is identical to the 600 less the
Temperature and Barometric readings (altitude.) Sometimes when I first
load a detailed map, it is a bit slow to load ~7sec, but after the map
is loaded the regen is quite quick. I have DirectRoute NA and have
created detailed maps of all the states to go on SD. Once the unit has
located itself and generated the map the first time, screen refreshes
are instantaneous during movement and 2-3 sec with a zoom in/out. I'm
not using Topo data, but have seen it in action and can't imagine it
being that much slower.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents worth.

You have to give the machine time to read data from the SD card. Not
all SD cards are the same speed. You might try a faster SD card,
although the bottleneck is more likely to be the device itself.
