Author Meridian Gold Question

I have a Meridian Gold GPS. I am going to Europe in June and am wondering
if the unit will work or if there is software downloads that I would need?

Thanks in advance,
David

The GPS will work and function fine. Just make sure you reinitialize it
after you trip and turn it on in an open area to allow the unit to get a
fix. This will take a few minutes. If you don't initialize it, it may take
hours....

I used the Color in Korea, just do as Skrambler (and the manual) said.
The only issue is the base map is probably not valid over there, so you
will not see any roads and only rough locations of certain city
centers(?). I used my GPS as a way to find my way back to the hotel and
as a means of marking points of interest to return to.

You can buy the MapSend DirectRoute Europe that "provides detailed
Navtech street maps and points of interest for France, Germany, Austria,
and Switzerland".

Does not seem like much of Europe is covered, but then I have not really
looked that closely.

Actually I found DR Europe coverage to be fine, but search the web to
find out what countries are included. Pretty sure it covers more than
France, Germany, Austria, > and Switzerland, rather most of wetsern europe.
Also, an easier and cheap solution would be to (temporarily) replace the
US basemap with a european one that you can find on the web. Check out
the meridian_europe section of yahoo groups. Not quite endorsed by
Magellan, but VERY useful. Get the MeridianFAQv2_0.pdf to see how it's
done, and back up the us basemap first so you can change back when you
return.
Change the basemap whether you buy DR europe or not; if you happen to
zoom out too much (>0.4 mi or so) the GPS falls back on the basemap
rather than DR, and the map will be empty if the US one is still there.

Cheers,

Martijn

Thanks Martin, If I ever get to go to Europe I will remember that about
the Europe group.

As far as the Mapsend information, that is a quote from Magellan. As I
said, I have not looked at it closely.

Me too and they are impressive when they work, mine is a couple
years old and it just went belly up, nothing to indicate it's
turning on, zip. Where can I get it repaired? I've sent 8
requests to Magellan in the past month and so far no answer. I'm to
deaf to use the phone or I'd call them. I've tried new batteries
and still nothing. It looks new but, but but...

dale,
there is a sequence of buttons to press to re-start after a bad d/l. it
involves holding a couple of the buttons down and then start. i appologize i
don't remember or have the exact info, but i crashed my unit while upgrading
software, and that was the fix. check the manual, or instructions on one of
the meridian update sites.it was under a "what to do if unit does not
re-start after download" kind of header. if i can find it i will post.

Magellan finally gave me a Return authorization, I returned it a
couple weeks ago and they fixed and returned it to me. Seems to work
great now.

Thanks for your suggestions, if it crashs again I'll try it.
