Updating Roadmate 700 to ver 5 problems

| Hi, I have read all posts on this topic and tried them (multiple
attempts, with turning off antivirus and firewall, oh and using the
rear USB port). Only once has my laptop recognized the GPS as a
removable storage device, and placed an icon to that effect in My
Computer. When it did, the DVD update program still said it was an
unrecognized USB device. Imagine my anticipation and disappointment!
I did speak with someone (two actually) at Thales support. I think they
were in India, but that should not matter much. In trying several
different modifications to my settings upon startup, we concluded that
maybe I had a problem with my DVD they sent me for $105. They said they
will research and call me back if it can be resolved over the phone, or
send me overnight (I won't hold my breath) a new upgrade package.
Has anyone had success with any other methods or the order in which
they tried steps? I followed the upgrade guide, but you all know
nothing worked.
I am in Chicago, so if someone has had a pc which worked, would you let
me run the update on your PC please? That is the one thing I haven't
done yet!
Thanks,
Dovid

| Hi Dovid
I had the same problem.
Sent the 700 to Thales in Okalahoma where they installed the upgrade..
Turned out to be a corrupted file on the 700.
Good luck

| I tend to agree that the problem is most likely with your RM 700 unit.
One thing for certain is that a new upgrade package won't help your computer
recognize the RM as a USB device.
You might try buying or borrowing a USB thumb drive or flash drive (some
sell for less than $20) and plugging it into your computer. If's it's
recognized and your RM 700 isn't, the problem is almost definitely with your
RM 700. Otherwise the problem is probably with your USB hardware or software
and your computer vendor may be able to help.

This can happen if your computer hasn't quite finished initializing the USB
connection when the installation program first checks for it. If you get
this far again and the installion program gives you a window with a Retry
button, try clicking it one or more times. Or try restarting the
installation program.

| Thanks for the advices. I tried my USB drive and indeed my laptop
recognized it right away. So we will try it again, a few times.
Btw, I never did get either a phone call back from Thales, or a new
DVD/CD set the next day as promised. Go figure.
I will be following up on the advices given. I just hope that if
nothing works, Thale will issue a refund.
Thanks again.

Thales will almost certainly be able to install the upgrade if you send them
your RM. In the process they'll probably repair any damage to your firmware
so that you should have no trouble installing any future upgrades you may
purchase.
It's a nice upgrade - hope you get it working.

| Ok, here is the update. After trying to do the upgrade on another pc (a
desktop), it still sometimes recognized the GPS and othertimes did not.
I talked through all this with Thales, and they concluded it was a
problem with the device which they said to send them (in Fort Worth now
I guess), and in two-three weeks I'll get it back. Nowhere was any
discussion about warranty or not.
I mentioned several upcoming trips on which I needed the GPS
desparately and the person in India wanted my cc # to pay for overnight
shipping. NO WAY was I going to give someone long distance over the
phone my credit card number. So after a few minutes of discussion with
their higher authority they agreed to pay for the overnight!! Should I
hold my breath?
I took the unit to the UPS store, insured it a bit and sent it with the
DVD to them. Hopefully I will get it back and they won't hold it ransom
for some out of warranty issue, and I will get it back overnight before
next Friday, some 10 days hence.
I will keep everyone posted...

| Oh well, guess I was right in not holding my breath. It is Saturday
night, the night before my trip where I needed my unit. Thales had told
me there would be no problem in getting my gps back, especially if I
overnighted it to them in Fort Worth, TX. So I did, $26 later, I was
told on Wednesday afternoon it was packed up and ready to be shipped.
WooHoo!
Thursday afternoon came and still no GPS. Many conversations later, the
systems were down and India could no longer communicate with Texas. How
about a phone call I asked?
They tried but could not get anyone in Fort Worth. And they (and Thales
corporate) would both not give me the number. Like a fortress.
I am now printing mapquests for my trip. Maybe I will have it when I
return, Again I will not hold my breath. I will however ask for a
refund of my shipping costs. What are my chances???

Not very good. I guess I should be happy, living in Fort Worth, I could
probably just drop mine off, and pick it up. Sorry you are having
trouble. Next time they tell you about a firmware upgrade, tell them no
thanks.... Those things are great at making doorstops/paperweights.
