I was in a Best Buy in the DFW area last night looking a nav systems.
There were no Magellan products. The saleguy said they have had them
recently, but they no longer carry any Magellan products.
Anyone know the story there?

Maybe they didn't like dealing with a French company, which was who
owned Magellan until last month. You can find the Magellan products at
Wal-Mart, Cabella's, and Bass Pro Shops, to name just a few.

My BestBuy in Columbia SC only had one GPS unit in the entire store. An
Explorist 400 way overpriced at $299.

My local Walmart is still selling the Magellan Meridian Gold, at $199,
no discount.

how much for one (meridian) with a color screen?
and while were at it- 3d topo?
and maybe a memory boost- how many mb does it come with? 8? like the gold or
is it more with the newer models?
i have been using a meridian gold for 4years now. i like it but have
recently lost the backlight function. afraid to send it to thalles for
repair- i doubt i'd get it back. terrible tech help. i hope that changes
along with the new company ownership

The Meridians are no longer being made. They were my favorites until I
bought a Garmin 76Cx.

The newer Magellans have less pages and fewer features than the older
one, and they don't fare well at all in comparison to the Garmins.

I still have a Meridian Marine and a Meridian Color. I still like the
Magellan topo mapping better than Garmin's, it has a little better
resolution and better detail. As soon as I figure out how to make my
own topo maps for the Garmin I'll probably get rid of the Meridians.

And that is a crying shame and one of the reason for Magellan's quick
decline in the GPSr market over the past year. They had a great unit
with the Meridian's and should have kept the line but upgraded the
software and features like Garmin did with the 76 series & Etrex units.

The Explorist were a step backwards and with them going to a patch
antenna and lost a big chunk of their supporters who loved the
Quad-Helix antenna of the Meridian and Sportrak units. The Explorist are
currently the only series of GPS'rs they make.

Maybe BB is getting ready to gear up for the new 2000 series they are coming
out with. The new 2200T is going to be hard to beat. Magellan is all
Costco here has.
