Author Explorist 300 - best batteries?

I'm about to head to the great outdoors with this thing, still on the
first set of batteries. Manual says expect 14 hours with alkalines.
Can I get longer battery life from LiMH rechargeables?

I have the eXplorist 400 which comes with lithium ion battery. It lasts
about 17 hours without the light, 14 hours with the light on low, and
about 7 hours with the light on high. I assume your question mean NIMH
rechargeables. You will find it gives less hours with them, but the
cost is less since they can be recharged 500 or so times. You can also
use the lithium disposables, which will last about 2-3 times as long as
the alkalines. Given that Sam's Club sells the lithium disposables for
12/$20, they seem a good alternative to alkalines. I find the
self-discharge rate of NIMH batteries makes them unsuitable for a GPS
that isn't used often.

I wasn't aware that lithium disposables were a good option.
I'll find some, thanks

They done a great job in my old Magellan 315. Much better for
intermittent use as they don't self-discharge. At the price I get them
for, they are much cheaper than alkalines, and quite a bit lighter as well.
