Author Map Updates Available (for $79.95)

I feel totally taken advantage now, after waiting 4 months for the new
map updates and then finding they arecharging $79,95 for them. You
would think that the maps would be free, at least for the first year.

I bought a new 3000T and kept seeing the update would be available in
September. I never thought they would charge for it. Guess I'll dump
it on Ebay and get me a Garmin.

I agree with you! you would think that it would be free or at the very
least a little bit cheaper. However after saying that; one doesn't know
how much it costs to build and put together the update. Must be awfully
time consuming getting all the updated information for those millions of
locations that they have in these units!

I just bought my upgrade online. There is a $20 coupon code but an
additional $6 to ship the upgrade (it is on DVD) so the total came to
$65.99. They should have made the upgrade downloadable to save the $6.

I don't know of any GPS makers that will give you free updates for the
mapping data. They do sell updates about once a year or so but I've
never seem them just give them away.

Garmin gets $75 for an update for their North American street/highway
mapping package. That package is $140 +/- retail and $100 or so at the
best street prices. The updates are also sold at retail and I have seen
street prices on the updates as low as $48 or so (not including shipping).

When I was still using Magellans (back with the Meridian handhelds) I
had to buy DirectRoute V3 to get newer mapping. As near as I can tell
that was the last update to that package until the one you are talking
about here.

It might be that you hoped to get free map updates but I doubt that it
was promised anywhere.

I wasn't really expecting a free update. What upset me; is that my buddy
received a GPS ( brand unknown ) for his birthday and it had all the new
area's for Calgary already loaded on the unit. Mine; which I received
about a month before his; is about 2 years behind. Shitty!!!

Hmmm,
You in Calgary? My 2550T Crossover came with up-to-date map info. I had
no trouble finding a friend's house in Evergreen, S.W. or my cabin out
in Sundre. Maybe you got older stock?

Garmin used to give you a free update to the newest mapping if you
bought a unit that the older version with it and you bought it after the
release of the newer version. Basically, if it had gotten out of date
on the shelf and you bought it. Now they no longer do that. Now, if
you can't figure it out before you buy, you're stuck with what you get.

Or you can pay for the update.

Not a happy situation but that is the way it is.

Is yours still under warranty? If it is, and it craps out, and if you
can RMA it for a repair, you may get a different unit back and it may
have the newer software on it. So maybe that is the best you can hope
for...

Good luck with it...

I agree with Theslaz. If the maps are theoretically outdated when you
buy the unit, it would seem like they would give the first update for
free. How do you know the version and dating when you buy the thing?
I guess I'll be sending in my money, but reluctantly.

So why do they advertise it at $79.99 when the only way you can get it
is on DVD. Why not just say it is $85.99?

I work in new home construction. So I'm in new areas all the time. Like
I said; it definitively is two years behind because I know when these
areas were developed. I agree with you. Old stock is what I got stuck with!

You could ask if it is not mentioned on the package. Or turn it on and
see what version is on it. I'm not a newbie to it all so I'd have some
advantage in knowing what to look for.

Is there any recourse where you bought it? A return or exchange? Or a
free upgrade from a dealer or something?

I think I'm done with Magellan forever. They have a lot of work to do
to get me interested in ever buying anything from them again.

Garmin is far from perfect but they are working out okay enough that I'm
happy.

Yes, but that really isn't an excuse for the prices they charge. It
seems to me that JUST an update to the database should be cheaper than
buying all new software, given that in most cases the changes to the
software are either trivial, or negative. I have yet to get a response
to a message about a database error from any mapping company, although I
did notice that a 1/2 mile 'dislocation' was fixed in a later version of
the software in one case. Surely the number of GPS units in use is
sufficient to spread that cost out a bit more.

I think their pricing plan is crap. If they would sell updates for an
annual fee of about $30, then they would likely sell many of them
online, and make more money in the end.
