Author Routes on an Garmin 76CS

Can someone explain!

I spend hours in Mapsource planning a route on the PC. Then I load it on to
my Garmin 76CS. then I select that route on my GPS and select NAVIGATE. and
the GPS asks if I want the fastest or the shortest route then proceeds to
calculate a completely different rout to the one I have just programed. How
do I get it to just follow the route I want it to?

cheers

Bob

For this to work you should use the same mapping in MapSource on the PC
that you have on the GPS.

Put a waypoint at the start and another at the final destination.
Create a new route with those two waypoints in it and see it it goes the
way you want.

If it does not, go to the first road on the route that you want to take
and that the MapSource did not use, place a waypoint on the that road,
add it to the route, and see if that gets you the route you want. You
may have to put the waypoint some distance down the road, like just
before your next change of roads.

Continue that process until the waypoints have forced MapSource to take
the roads you want to take. Basically, you are putting enough waypoints
on the route you want to take that MapSource or the GPS will not find a
shorter or faster route that passes through those same points.

Upload the route to the GPS and, if you have the same roads on the GPS
you should get the same routing.

When you just pick the start and end points in MapSource it will create
a route that has "via points" at places where it decides to make turns
and those will be seen in the route uploaded to the GPS. But those are
not like the waypoints you place and select for use. I'm not certain
but I think that the GPS considers the use of the uploaded via points to
be sort of optional when it calculates the route. And if it thinks
there is a better way to go it will use it.

But if you placed all the waypoints in the route, the GPS will route to
those points. Even if the points are not found to be located on
roadways on the mapping on the GPS. For that reason, you have to be
careful to place waypoints on (not next to) the roads. And for divided
highways, you may have zoom in until you can see both sets of lanes to
make sure you place then on the lanes going in the right direction.
