I have found that this group is the best resource for helping me learn
how to use my new explorist 400 and mapsend topo 3d software. With
this website, I fund a patch to repair the original mapsend software
(would not recognize disk 3) and also allowed the CD to not be in the
drive.

I also appreciate the hints how to load detailed basemaps into my
unit. however I read that the unit is limited to as many 64 MB
detailed maps that you can fit on your SD card. I have been able to
load a basemap that was 85 Mb with no problem so dont know if that is
a real limitation. Any comments

I also found easygps.com a useful free program that converts my bke
routes into the GPX format and allows it to be loaded to
motionibased.com (a garmin website).

Again thanks jack and the rest of the community. You all have made me
really like my little unit. Would have been frustrating to not have
usenet as a resource.

The Robert Lipes FAQ addresses a lot of useful stuff, including map
sizes and limits:

And the Magellan FAQ, version 2.0 (PDF) by Dan Surratt (OCT 03) also
details the fix of changing or adding a line to the *.ini file that will
increase file size limits:

According the Lipes FAQ success may vary on the ini file mod, I did it
and had no problems. Have not used it in some time though. The change
I made (detailed in item 50 on Dan Surratt's FAQ) was to add this line
to the MAPSEND.INI file:

When I was using my Meridians regularly for moving boats I had the
routine for naming and renaming the BlueNav map files as I traveled down
pat. Because of the way Magellan set that up with one file name and so
many chart regions, I sometimes crossed two or three chart regions in a
day. I would pull the card, put it in a PDA, and rename files to get
the charts for the next region. I'm finding the Garmin 76Cx that took
the Meridians place to be a joy to own but there are still things that I
miss about the Meridians.

Lots of good stuff in those two links above, those are the kind of folks
that are my "Heroes of GPS" for all they have done for so many of us.
It seems like it was only recently that I was terrified by the amount of
info at http://gpsinformation.net/. I have come to think of that as the
"Joe, Jack & Dale" show and go there often.

I have an eXplorist 600. The maximum map size, as controlled by the listing
in the ini file, varies from program to program. USA Topo3D allows for
larger maps (246,784) out of the box. DirectRoute and Topo Canada are
smaller. I have set mine to 122,880 for all except for USA Topo3D, for
which I use 246,784. I have found that if I use much larger map sizes, the
redraw speed of the GPS screen slows considerably. There are also reports
of corrupted maps, although I haven't noticed anything like that. Finally,
larger maps mean it becomes harder to find POIs--e.g., how many Pine Streets
do you think there are in several adjoining states.

There are also Meridian and Mapsend groups, as well as others devoted to
Magellan GPS. Generally, you must join these and they are moderated. They
have many good tips and helpful users. BTW, there is much you can do when
you learn how to manipulate the various ini and cfg files in the Mapsend
products. For example, if you have Topo3D USA and DirectRoute North
America, there is a way to add the topo lines to the DirectRoute GPS
display. You can find this info in the Yahoo Groups.

Thanks. The reporting system seems to be more oriented to POI and
address information than what I discovered (map doesn't follow
territory). In NC, highway 321 from I-40 to Gastonia wanders away from
the display track of the highway for the entire trip, only being
accurate at the intersections.

The file size limit for MapSend Topo 3D is 241,000 kilobytes (not the same
as 241 megabytes) without any modification of the INI file.
