Roadmate 700 Version 5 install trouble

| I've been trying to install the version 5 upgrade onto my roadmate 700
for about a week now and I've had no luck. I've seen other people with
troubles, but not like mine. It will load 62% of the information onto
the 700 but then has an error saying it can not copy a file because of
an I/O device error. Any help would be great. I'm gonna try it again on
my brothers laptop as soon as I can. Some say that should help but who
knows. Thanks.

Disable any power saving and see if that helps. Your USB port might be
powering down because the file transfers take so long without continuous USB
port activity.

I had a similar problem. Magellan told me to use a rear USB port
rather than a front mounted one. I was also told to disable all
anti-virus programs. Instant success. Seems the front USB ports are on
a small extension cable whereas the rear ports are straight off the
mother board.

| Well thanks for the info but I've still had not luck upgrading it. I've
tryed to use a different newer computer and this time it stoped at 60%
with an cycle redundancy check error. If Im right I think that it means
theres a problem with the disc or USB cable. So Im trying on the new
computer once again and we'll see what happens. Any more help from
anyone would be great. Thanks

Have you tried running the Windows disc checking tool to try to repair the
disc?
I haven't heard of anyone trying this and it could well mess things up even
more. But if your disc is bad you'll probably have to send in your unit for
repair anyway, so this might be worth a try.
Post back if you don't know how to run this tool and want to try it.

Chris,
Just want to warn you that even if the following works it may not address
the source of your problem. I've heard rumors that many of the early RM700's
and many refurbished units have problems with the USB hardware/firmware. If
so, you'll have to send your unit in for repair.
I assume you have Windows. Here's how things are with my Windows XP Media
Center system. They may be a little different on your computer.
I ran steps (1) to (9) on my RM and it still works fine, so up to there
should be completely safe.
(1) Attach your RoadMate via the USB cable but don't insert the V5
Installation DVD. If a window pops up asking what action you want Windows
to take, select "Take no action" and click "OK".
(2) Click or double click "My Computer" on your desktop or Start menu.
(3) In the My Computer window look for your RoadMate under "Devices with
Removable Storage". On my computer the RoadMate entry reads "Removable Disk
(E:) Removable Disk". Your drive letter may differ from "(E:)".
(4) Right-click the RoadMate device then left-click "Properties".
(5) Left-click the "Tools" tab.
(6) Under "Error Checking" click "Check Now".
(7) In the resulting Check Disk form there are two options:
- Automatically fix file system errors
- Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors
(8) Click "Start" without selecting either option and see if you get any
error messages.
(9) Click "OK" in the pop-up window that reports "Disk check complete".
(10) Now try step (7) with both options selected. This will take a lot
longer (how long I don't know). It's the 2nd option that should detect bad
spots on the disc and tell the disc to avoid them. If this step doesn't find
or fix any errors you probably have a bad USB port on your RM. You can try
step (11) anyway, but you'll probably have no luck.
(11) Now retry the V5 installation following the instructions and all the
advice the others gave you.
Let me know what happens, good or bad, or if you have any questions or
problems. I'm not a RoadMate or Windows or hardware expert, but I'll try to
help if I can.

P.S. Before turning off your RoadMate or disconnecting the USB cable you
have to stop the device.
On my computer there's a USB icon in the lower right corner of my Windows
Toolbar. Right-click this icon then left-click "Safely Remove Hardware". In
the resulting "Safely Remove Hardware" window left-click "USB Mass Storage
Device" then "Stop". To make sure you have the right device look for
"Thal.Nav Roadmate" in the resulting "Stop a hardware device" window then
left-click "OK". Then left-click "Close" in the "Safely Remove Hardware"
window. Then you can safely unplug the USB cable.
Alternatively you can just shutdown your computer before unplugging your USB
cable.

| Well thanks for the tips but no luck, same troubles. I've e-mailed
magellan support twice but I've heard nothing back. I've also e-mail
their repair pepole and heard nothing back. So I'm a little pissed
right now. I've only had this thing for 2 months and it only worked for
about 3 weeks. Now that the update has screwed up my unit its useless
to me its got the menus but no map data. Im been holding off on calling
them because I always get someone who cant speak english very good and
that just piss' me off more. So for now all I can do is wait till I
hear from support or the repair people. Thanks once again for all your
help.

sending it back to them and waiting for the return is the only way to
accomplish the update. You will have to send the update disc with the
unit. It will take all of the two to three weeks to get it solved and
who knows how long it will take to get the unit back. Calling does no
good since they are not at the repair facility. They seemingly are not
in this country and will only email or text the repair facility with
questions.
But since you are stuck needing the update to make the thing work at
this point, just send it to the repair facility but don't hold your
breath.

| Hi Chris,
I was reading this news group and found that you recently had trouble
with your RM-700.
I have an RM 700 that I bought a few years ago and I am so tired of the
Magellan customer service in general at this point, even though I like
my unit when it works.
I had so much trouble with the unit, the windshield mount broke, then
the power adapter on the back of the unit broke, the unit freezes every
once in a while, gets turned off in the middle (most of the time,
unfortunately at the time to take major turns :-( ), Sometimes it takes
15-20 minuted to acquire satellite, sometimes only after several
reboots (power on-off) it starts to acquire signal. Once in a while
when I get this trouble I go thru the diagnostics and see how many
satellites it can see, it is very very slow in acquiring satellites and
require more than 4 satellites to start locating where it is. Such a
piece of crap when it comes to initializing.
I upgraded the firmware to 3.54 recently using the usb adapter and it
went ok. I was thinking of buying and upgrading the Map software on
the unit since my software is more than a year old now. I am little
hesitant after I saw your trouble in these postings. Could you please
let me know how your upgrade went? Did you finally install it
successfuly?

| I also had trouble with a version 5 update install. Took the program all the
way to the end 99% then said install failed. contacted Magellan customer
support, they suggested to try another computer but were not hopeful. That
failed as well. I contacted them again and they arranged for UPS to
collected it, it was sent to France from the UK and came back in about 10
days. works fine now and no extra charge over the initial update disc. No
charge for collection/return. I was pleased with them. Even when I had been
trying and failing to install the software, I used it and it worked fine
including giving the names of roads which are part of the software it was
telling me had failed.
