How do I get previous destinations into POI's for Roadmate 760
|

| Hello, Magellan's s/w leaves me in the dust! I want to make POI's from
previous destinations - how?
What is the CF card good for other than backing up the previous
destinations? I have not been able to read or transfer any of the data
through the software. What good is the software for really locating POI's?
How does one extract the lat/long from a saved previous destination?
Is there a way to transfer info to/from either Delorme SA or M$ Streets
& Trips?
Thank you, I will let everyone know how this progress'

POIs are normally the points in the searchable databases in the basemap
and in supplemental (optional at extra cost) detail mapping packages.
POIs are like business or government agencies you can search
for/navigate to.
The meaning of the word POI has become contaminated a little by the same
term being applied to what used to be called waypoints (the specific
lat/long locations that define the intended path of a route).
So with that possible confusion out of the way, if what you are talking
about are anything other than waypoints, I don't know how you would add
those.
I did notice that some of the RoadMate product pages mention that there
is a "Magellan POI Manager" but it does not offer any clues at all about
where to find that or how to get it. Maybe it comes on the DVD with
some of the optional mapping packages?
If you're talking about downloading and managing the waypoints you have
on your Magellan (you didn't mention the model, that would be helpful in
getting answers) you can look at the some of the software at this link:
http://gpsinformation.net/#3rdparty
There are several shareware and freeware applications there that will
manage that kind of data for you. I use GPS Utility and am very happy
with that. It is not freeware but it is kept up to date by its very
knowledgable and interactive developer, Alan Murphy.

Not sure which software your talking about. The data I mention above
are the waypoints, routes, and tracks that are stored in the GPS
receiver's main memory while in use, not on the SD card. And I don't
think any of the utilities at the link will read data from the SD card
while it is in the Magellan. The Magellan Meridians could save data to
the SD card and also load data to main memory from the card, I'm not
sure if the newer eXplorists, RoadMates, etc, will do that too or not.
There was also a MapSend application (free from Magellan?) that did some
data up and downloads but I did not use it very much and can't remember
how capable it was.

If saved as a waypoint, you should be able to download that info (along
with the datetime and elevation too). If you can save the data (routes,
waypoints, and tracks) to the SD card you may be able to open that files
with one of the utilities above.
Those utilities will present the data all neatly arranged in a columnar
format and you can do various kinds of editing and display of the data.
Some will let you display the data over a map image if you have one.
On the Meridians I used to be able to take long trips and save track to
the SD card and then, after my return home, I could reverse the process
by uploading the tracks to the GPS and then downloading them with GPS
Utility. There was something in the formatting in the files on the SD
cards that made trying to read the data directly from the files less
than successful.
But anything that was saved to the SD card could be loaded back into
main memory and then downloaded from there.

These two links have some info on doing that for S&T data.
http://www.gpsbabel.org/index.html
http://www.gpsbabel.org/st2gpx/faq.html
Some of the other third party softwares above will do some conversion
for DeLorme data formats.

Let me know if the conversion of S&T 2006 data does not work, I think I
might have some more info on that somewhere else.
I was a loyal Magellan user until last summer when I bought a Garmin
76Cx handheld. Under the ownership of Thales Navigation, Magellan's
generally apathetic support to their customers and almost nonexistent
hardware and software development in their products over the last few
years hurt them badly.
After the recent change of ownership at Magellan, there were no promises
made to Magellan users that indicated things would change much or
quickly. The eXplorist and RoadMate lines were new when I shifted to
Garmin and I've not had any experience with them. I think I hear more
not too positive things about them than good things.
I've since acquired a Garmin dashmount unit and am not likely to shift
back to Magellan anytime soon. The Garmin products are head and
shoulder above the Magellans on both hardware and software features.
I'd like to see Magellan get and try to stay competitive with Garmin to
keep the market balanced for consumers. I'm afraid if Magellan does not
make any moves soon, Garmin will have the market to themselves and
consumers will have to pay higher prices.
My Garmin 76Cx is head and shoulders better on hardware and software
than any of the eXplorists would have been. I wanted to upgrade to
something newer and better Magellan simply did not have anything to offer.
