Author Cig. lighter cord does not work in my car???

I bought a Roadmate 850 recently. I have a 1988 model Toyota. At first
it appeared I had gotten a bad cig. lighter DC adapter from Magellan.
The cars' lighter works fine. The adapter cord appeared to plug in
fine, but was inop. I checked it with a DC bench power supply and
found that it does put out 5 volts. It is not making connection to the
receptacle.
Someone told me that the cig. lighter receptacle design has changed in
recent years. It looks like a major job to pull out the current
receptacle/outlet and change to some other one. Is there some sort of
an adapter made for this problem?

correction: its a magellan 800, not 850.

I bought a generic cellular phone charger which had a sleeve which fit into
a larger cigarette lighter socket. The cars I used did not need it. You
might be able to find one of those and use the sleeve part to make your plug
fit in the larger socket of your car.

Well, that sleeve is the adapter I need apparently. Where to find one?

If that is what I think it is, it is a thin plastic sleeve with a slit
in one side that can slide up over the contacts and will stay in place
by itself to make the body of the plug larger to better fit the socket.
The contacts on that type have enough flexibility to make contact in
either the larger or smaller sockets.

So if you can piece of plastic tubing about the right size you may be
able to make one.

I have similar issues with my car adaptor. It works in everything I
own except the car I want to use it in. I had installed a power point
under the dash of my VW Thing and the Magellan adaptor, for whatever
reason, refuses to work in it. I even bought one of those splitters
that have 2 receptacles off 1 plug and it won't work with that either.
I'm gonna cut the end off the Magellan cord and put another type cig
lighter plug on it.

Be careful, some of the plugs house a DC-DC inverter that drops the
input voltage from the auto to a lower, more stable, DC voltage. The
earlier Magellan handhelds had to have a 3.8V input, some later models
(in the RoadMate series I think) need a 5 to 8 Volt input.

Car systems range from the low 12's up almost to 15 Volts depending on
other loads, battery conditions, etc.

If you have a VOM you can test your adapter to see what the output
voltage is now. If it is around 12V, unplug the adapter, test the
voltage on the DC outlet, and if they are the same then the GPS is using
the unregulated 12V (nominal) voltage from the car and your plan for
replacing the plug will not change anything.

Some GPS receivers have built in power regulation. Many Garmins will
take a 9-35VDC input, other Garmins require a well-regulated 5VDC input
from a proprietary DC adapter.

Studying the specs on GPS receivers and accessory cables will sometimes
let you figure out if you can change or eliminate the supplied adapters.

Most cigarette lighter plugs have a fuse in them also. That's the first
thing that I would check before cutting the end off. You usually can
access it by unscrewing the end nearess the tip. Mine has a metal
knurled ring that you unscrew to access the fuse. Some have part of
black plastic end that screws off.

Be very careful about this, as My Magellan has a DC regulator in the
plug, which has a regulated 5V output. If you were to put a plain
cig. lighter plug on the cord which passes the cars' full voltage, you
will fry the power input circuit on the GPS and they won't cover that
under warranty!
