Author SD-card map update

I have a Magellan Roadmate 300. All the map information resides on an
SD-card. However, it is a little out of date.

When I visit the Magellan website to see if there are any updates, there
doesn't seem to be any information about replacing/updating this memory
card.

How is this done? Do you purchase a new SD-card or update the present
one via software?

David,
Sorry to tell you but Magellan has all but abandoned support for the
300, I have one also and have the same issue. My son has a 360 and
the maps seem a little more up to date, but not much. I intend to
copy the card and firmware in it and load it into the 300 when I get a
chance. Beyond that, we're out of luck.

Well, that sucks!

I'm wondering what the USB cable that came with the 300 was for. In the
documentation, it is never mentioned.

How hard can it be to update a silly SD card?

Sob! You got that right!

I moved on to a Garmin 76Cx handheld and StreetPilot 2610 for the
motorcycle/car last year. But every time I use the 76Cx I still
remember things that I miss about my Meridian Marine and Meridian Color.

In fact, I can't bring myself to sell them. I got them out a couple of
weeks ago, fired them up, checked the batteries. Gave them a fond
caress, and put them away. I ain't done with them yet...

GPS, it's like an addiction.

I've got a Garman GPS III that is way out of date but still rugged
enough to use on my Harley. It takes care of the basic stuff and a
paper road map serves as an auxiliary data source.

The original RoadMate 300 came with no maps. You had to use the USB cable
to add maps either to the internal memory or to the SD card. The Roadmate
Manager software does not recognize an SD card in a Card reader/writer and
you cannot load maps directly that way. You would also use the USB cable to
change the language or from male to female voices. You can save your
address book on the PC and use the RoadMate Manager software to copy it to
the device.

The 300R and 360 came with pre-loaded SD cards and presumably updated SD
cards could be purchased if Magellan decided to offer them. The maps
themselves appear to be the same as DirectRoute maps. I have no idea what
would happen if you copied the DirectRoute map subdirectories into the
corresponding locations in the RoadMate Manager software on the hard drive.
Someday I might create a hybrid set of folders to se what would happen. I
have not figured out the registry changes I would need to make.

Dave,

You now have asked this question numerous tiimes. If you have the Roadmate
300 you update your maps using the USB cable or a card reader using the
Mapsend software. So if your Mapsend Software is not updated you need to
get updated software. If you need to update the maps on the Roadmate 360
which is a newer model than you will have to use an update from Magellan if
they ever come out with one. the main difference between the Roadmate 300
and the 360 was that the 300 came with a smaller SD card and the Mapsend
software. The 360 came with newer firmware and the maps preloaded on a
larger SD Card.

SO WHAT UNIT DO YU HAVE AND CAN YOU STOP ASKING THE SAME QUESTION.

Yes, but this does not update the maps - does it?

I want to update the map database for the Roadmate 300. I have not
figured out how to do that. The USB cable doesn't seem to download
updated maps, nor does it seem Magellan offers and updated SD card.

I have the Roadmate 300.

The reason I keep asking the same question (since you seem to have been
following is so closely) is that I keep getting different answers. If
your answer is correct - that's great! But, I also got other answers like:

1) You need to purchase an updated SD card.
2) Magellan doesn't support the Roadmate 300 anymore.
3) You can download updated map files.
4) You have to use the USB cable to download the updated maps.
5) You have to use the USB cable along with the MapSend software to
update the maps.

Your answer was #5. And yet, nowhere in the documentation of the
Roadmate 300 does it mention how the USB cable is to be used, nor is
there any mention of the MapSend software.

Further, I called Magellan support one time on this issue. Despite the
language barrier between myself and the technical support guy, he seemed
very confused as to how the Roadmate 300 maps are to be updated. He was
absolutely no help.

Also, when you read about the MapSend software, it does not mention that
it supports the Roadmate series - which makes me reluctant to buy it
although it readily mentions support for the Explorist series.
