Sounds like you could use both DirectRoute North America and Topo 3D.
The first to find and get around on highways and the second to plan and
mark off road (topo) positions.

I prefer the older MapSend Topo. It shows trails that the 3D program
doesn't. With the 3D program they send you to Trails.com, which is an extra
fee, etc. As far as the actual topography goes, as far as I can tell,
there's precious little difference between the two.

FWIW, if you're doing serious planning, you're far better off using a laptop
and a variety of map sources. Since I'm mostly a Mac person, the MacGPSPro
program is a good example of something that can digest a lot of different
maps, satellite photos, etc. Indeed it would be handy to be able to upload
your customized maps to the receiver, but that's a bit of a trick.

Lastly, for serious work, the best approach would be to obtain a
receiver/system that is appropriate to the task of small and large scale
surveying. I don't think I'd even want to plan a simple fence pole line on
varied terrain using the consumer GPS + map products. IMHO of course.
