Author 3000T battery status light

I have had my Magellan 3000T for 2 months now but for the past few days, the
battery status light on the front of the unit will not change from red to
green when the batteries are fully charged. The software battery status
indicator (the green boxes) show the batteries are fully charged. I have
left the unit plugged into the car cigarette lighter (constant power supply
even with vehicle off) for 24 hours but the light doesn't change (like it
used to after a few hours of charging). The vehicle is not hot which would
prevent the charging. The software shows the battery charging when
connected. When I disconnect the power supply, it appears fully charged
yet the LED does not turn green anymore. I have rebooted the unit. I have
a service request into Magellan but was wondering if anyone had any other
ideas I should try while waiting for their response. Thanks.

UPDATE: I called Magellan tech support and immediately got through but the
person I spoke with had such a heavy Indian accent I spent most of my time
asking him to repeat himself. He kept wanting me to plug my GPS in to run
some tests but I was in my office when I called (with the unit) but no power
cord as all I have is the cigarette lighter cord that came with it.
Finally, he told me to see how long it would run on its batteries. Despite
the internal battery status indicating the batteries were fully charged, it
only ran for about an hour before shutting down. So I called back and got
someone with an even worse accent (hard to believe). He tried to explain to
me the difference between shutting the GPS off and putting it into sleep
mode. I finally convinced him that was not the problem so he gave me a
return number and address to send it in for repair (under warranty). But I
have to pay the shipping and he said it will take 3 weeks. Now that I have
come to rely on having a GPS, that is going to be tough to do. I bought the
unit from Costco online so I was going to return it and buy another but they
don't carry that model anymore and I cannot find anyone else selling it for
the same price (or less) than what I paid. So I guess I will box it up and
send it in. At least I can back up my destinations file to a removable card
and (hopefully) restore it when I get the unit back.

UPDATE 2: Received the unit back from Magellan yesterday. It was the same
one but the battery issue was repaired. No restore necessary. Took 17 days
including shipping (ground) both ways.
