| I have just purchased a Crossover GPS and am waiting for its arrival.
I hope the pros are alot better than the cons which I am trying to
locate, maybe in this group. I do alot of exploring the wilds of
Nevada and California, like ghost and mining towns. I hope the base
topo map is good with back roads etc. Could anyone let me know how
good is this base map and are there detailed( like off roads, etc)
maps or are they needed. I did have a Garmin 60Csx which was just
ripped off. Any info on this GPS or where I can look info up will be
a great help. Thanks and I am new to this group. My name is Ted and

| I am in Canada and cannot comment on the US base Topo maps. I had to
purchase additional maps for Canada as they are not pre-loaded. They are
sufficient for my use - 30m. I believe the US base maps are 100m, if that is
sufficient for your purposes, the detail is good.

I recently switched from Magellan to Garmin. I have a Meridian Platinum
(useless, now, since it only runs off the 12v adapter) and an explorist
XL.
I like the eXplorist as a receiver, but I no longer use it because
Magellan's topo maps are low resolution (1:100,000) and show no trails
whatsoever. I also bought their BluNav charts for the West Coast, but
I cannot use them because I do not trust them, having found literally
dozens of sounding errors in the San Juan Islands area alone. Many of
these errors were serious enough that one could easily run aground
navigating certain channels from relying on these worthless charts.
When I reported the errors to Navtech--the company that sells chart
data to Magellan--they reported that they already knew about those
errors and had fixed them long ago, but that Magellan had not updated
their charts.
Garmin's standard US topo maps are also 1:100,000, but they show lots
of trails and points of interest that are of interest to a backpacker
or camper, and from what I've been able to tell so far, the trails are
mapped pretty accurately (particularly useful when you're breaking a
trail in the snow). Garmin also sells the 1:24,000 national parks
maps, which are really nice, offering all the detail of 7.5 minute USGS
maps.
One Magellan product that looks as if it has possibilities is the
Triton, since it seems to be fully compatible with the National
Geographic topos, which, I have heard, are quite good. But I'm so sick
of Magellan that I decided to make a clean break now and not give
Magellan any more chances.
